Social Justice and Responsibilty

The theme social justice and responsibilty is broken into three separate categories in light of our responsibilities to each of the following: God, humanity, and our environment. They are broad categories to enable the learning community to explore the various aspects of each.

For example, social justice and responsibilty to God will mean different things to different students based on religious affiliations or belief systems. I envision morality on a macro level in class discussions such as slavery or inequalities. I recently read James Martin's My Life with the Saints and thought the ideas and examples he discusses present uplifting resolutions to sometimes difficult personal (micro) problems.

Likewise, social justice and responsibility to humanity also gives students the opportunity to think about how they can help each other work through difficult times in their lives. The readings of either Mortensen or Farmer would fit nicely in the category since they are examples of individuals who gave selflessly to those on the margin of society. Social justice and responsibilty to the enviroment lends itself to students thinking about the exploitation of natural resources and other humans in an effort to maintain creature-comfort lifestyles we enjoy. In addition to the reading, I have shown a video, "Trinkets and Beads," about the exploitation of indigenous peoples in the Amazon by a U.S. corporation.
