The First Letter of Paul
to the Thessalonians
Translation by Sheila E. McGinn, Ph.D.
1
-
Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, to the church of Thessalonika in God the
Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ - grace to you and peace.
-
We give thanks to God always for you all, making remembrance of you in
our prayers,
-
unceasingly remembering your works of faith and labor of love and patience
of hope in the Lord Jesus Christ before the face of (in the sight of) God
and our Father
-
knowing, brothers and sisters beloved by God, your election,
-
because our gospel came not to you in logos only, but also in power and
in holy spirit and much conviction, as you know of such a character we
became among you for your sake.
-
And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received/welcomed
the logos in much persecution/affliction with joy of holy spirit,
-
such that you became a model/type to all those believing in [the regions
of] Macedonia and Achaia.
-
For from you sounding forth the logos of the Lord, not only in Macedonia
and Achaia, but in every place your faith toward God is ?, so that we have
no need to say anything.
-
for those with us report what sort of entry toward you , and how
you turned toward God from the idols to serve God the Living and True
-
and to await his son from the heavens, the one having been raised from
among the dead, Jesus our deliverer out of the coming wrath.
2
-
For you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, our entry among you, that
[it] was not [in] vain,
-
but having previously suffered and having been outrageously treated - as
you know - in Philippi - we were confident in our God to speak to you the
gospel of God in much struggle.
-
for our appeal [was] not from deceit, nor of impurity, nor yet of treachery
-
but as having been put to the test by God to be entrusted with the gospel,
even so we speak, not as pleasing humans, but rather God who tests our
hearts.
-
for neither at any time anytime in flattering words did we come, as you
know , nor under covetous/rapacious pretext, God is witness,
-
nor seeking glory form humans, neither from you nor of others
-
being able to wield authority as apostles of Christ. But rather we became
gentle in your midst, just as a mother cherishes her children
-
so having a kindly feeling toward you, we took delight to impart to you
not only to you, we took delight to impart to you not only the gospel of
God but also our very selves, because you had become so beloved to us.
-
for you remember, brothers and sisters, our labor and hardship, night and
day working in order that I would not be a burden to any of you, proclaiming
to you the gospel of God
-
you are witnesses as well as God, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly
we became among you who believe,
-
just as you know how we encouraged each one of you as a father his own
children
-
and comforted and implored you to the walking worthy of God who has summoned
you to his kingship and glory
-
and for this also we thank God without ceasing, that receiving the word
we preached of God you received it not a human message but as it truly
is the word of God, Who also works among you who believe
-
for you became imitators, brothers and sisters, of the churches of God,
the ones in Judea, in Christ Jesus, in order that these things you have
suffered and you have been on guard against your own, and just as they
from the Judeans,
-
who also put to death the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and have severely
persecuted us, and not striving to please God, and hostile to all people
-
preventing us from speaking to the gentiles in order that they might be
saved, to the filling up of their sins always. For upon them has come the
wrath to the telos.
-
But we, brothers and sisters, made orphans by separartion from you for
a short time-- in appearence, not in heart-- we were even more zealous
to see your face[s] with great desire.
-
Wherefore, we would have come to you, even I, Paul, once and a second time,
but I was hindered by the adversary
-
for what [is] our hope or joy or crown of rejoicing - if not you - before
our lord Jesus Christ in his parousia
-
for you are our glory and our joy
3
-
Wherefore no longer passing over in silence, we consented to be left in
Athens alone,
-
and sent Timothy, our brother and co-worker of God in the gospel of Christ
for the purpose of strengthening you and comforting you in your faith
-
that no one might be deceived in these afflictions. For you yourself know
that we are destined for this
-
for also when we were with you, we foretold that we were certainly to be
afflicted, just as it came to pass and you know.
-
Through this I, for my part, could no longer forbear. I sent in order to
know your faith, lest somehow the tempter had been tempting you and our
labor had become in vain.
-
But now Timothy having come to us from you and bringing good tidings to
us of your faith and love, and that you have remembrance of us always with
love, having desired greatly to see us and we you,
-
through this we have been comforted, brothers and sisters, concerning you
in all our distress and trouble through your faith,
-
that now we live if you stand firm in the Lord
-
For how can we return thanks to God concerning you for all the joy with
which we rejoice concerning you before our God,
-
night and day praying above all to see you in person and to complete what
is lacking in you faith
-
but now the same God and our Father and our Lord Jesus make straight our
way toward you
-
but/and the lord cause you to increase and to abound in love toward one
another and toward all, as also toward you,
-
to the establishing of your blameless hearts in holiness before our God
and Father in the parousia of our Lord Jesus with his saints.
4
-
Now furthermore, brothers and sisters, we ask and appeal to you in the
lord Jesus in order that as you have received from us how/the way in which
you must walk abd please God, just so you might walk, in order to progress/excel
more and more.
-
for you know what sort of instructions we gave to you through the lord
Jesus
-
For this is the will of God, your holiness, your abstaining/keeping from
porneia (sexual vice),
-
that each of you should know to gain control of your own vessel in(to)
holiness and honor
-
not in lustful passion as indeed the gentiles who do not know God
-
not to go beyond and take advantage of one's brother in the undertaking,
because the Lord is vengeful concerning all such things, as also we foretold
to you and were witnesses
-
for God has not called us to impurity/immorality but rather, in(to) holiness
-
for that very reason then the one who nullifies rejects not [the commands
of] human beings but [of] God who also gives his holy Spirit to you
-
But concerning filial love you have no need to write to you, for you yourselves
are being taught by God to love one another
-
for also you do this to all the brothers and sisters everywhere in all
of Macedonia. But we beseech you, brothers and sisters, to excel more and
more,
-
and to have as your ambition to be quiet and to accomplish your [own] affairs
and to work with/in your hand[s], just as we instructed you,
-
in order that you might behave decently (in the eyes of) those outside
and have need of nothing.
-
But we will not you to be ignorant, brothers and sisters, concerning the
ones who have fallen asleep, [that you do] not sorrow as also do the rest
of those persons having no hope
-
For if we believe that Jesus did and rose again, so also God will lead
with him those who are asleep in Jesus.
-
for we say this to you in the word of the Lord, that we who live, being
left behind until/for the parousia of the Lord, will by no means precede
those who have fallen asleep
-
that the Lord himself will come down with a cry of command, with a voice
of an archangel and with the call of God's trumpet, and the dead in Christ
will rise first
-
then we the living remaining behind, together with them will be snatched
up into (the) clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so always shall we
be with the Lord.
-
wherefore comfort/encourage one another in these words.
5
-
Concerning the chronon and kairon, brothers and sisters, we do not need
to write to you.
-
For you yourselves well know that the day of the of the Lord will come
like a thief in the night.
-
Whenever they shall say, peace and security, then sudden destruction will
come upon them even as birth-paugs of a full womb, and they shall not escape
-
but you, brothers and sisters, you are not in darkness, in order that that
day will seize you as a thief
-
for you are all children of light and children of day; you are not of night
nor indeed of darkness
-
so then may we not sleep as the rest, but rather may we be watchful and
be self-possessed
-
for the sleeping ones sleep at night, and the ones becoming intoxicated
get drunk at night.
-
but let us, being of the day, be self-controlled, clothing ourselves with
the breastplate of faith and love and putting on the helmet of saving hope
-
God has not appointed us for wrath but rather for obtaining salvation through
our Lord Jesus Christ,
-
the one having died for us, in order that, whether we are watchful or are
sleeping, we may be living together with him.
-
Wherefore encourage/console one another and build up one another, even
as also you do.
-
But I ask you, brothers and sisters, to stand in a (close) relation to
those who toil among you and rule/care for you in the Lord and admonish/instruct
you,
-
and to regard them most highly, in love, for their works. Be at peace among
yourselves.
-
but we encourage you, brothers and sisters, admonish the idle, encourage
the faint-hearted, pay attention to the downtrodden, be patient toward
all.
-
See that no one renders evil for evil, but rather always aspire to the
good toward one another and toward all.
-
always rejoice,
-
pray constantly,
-
in everything give thanks: for this is God's will in Christ Jesus toward
you
-
Do not suppress the Spirit
-
Do not disdain the utterances of the prophet
-
but examine all, hold fast what is good,
-
From all appearances of sinfulness keep away.
-
But the one God of peace sanctify you through and through, and may you
completely, spirit and soul and body, be preserved in the parousia of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
-
Faithful [is] the one calling you, and likewise [that one] will do.
-
Brothers and sisters, pray [also] for us.
-
Welcome all the brothers and sisters with
-
a holy kiss. I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle to be read to all
the brothers and sisters.
-
The grace of our lord Jesus Christ [be] with you.
