Small Group Discussion #3

After forming your small group, delegate one of the four roles to each group member. Be sure you give each group member time to answer the questions. At the top of the page where you are recording the notes from your discussion, write the name of each group member and indicate which role she/he took for this discussion (e.g., E, C, R, S).

  1. Discuss the following statement: "The affirmation of Christ's divinity puts Christ, not in a position of superiority, but in one of sovereignty." (30) What is the significance of this distinction according to Beeck?
  2. Discuss the following contemporary Christian summary of the "Saving Mystery" of Jesus, the Christ. Does this summary include everything that is essential to an emotional, intellectual, and political understanding of salvation in Christ? How so? How would you improve it?
    1. The Cross is witness to and result of the omnipresent reality of the alienation of human beings from God, from themselves, from each other, and from nature;
    2. Resurrection is a real possibility for all human beings;
    3. Incarnation is an on-going event of re-creation and reconciliation in the Spirit of Jesus alive in the Christian community.
