What:  “Passions about the Passion: Portrayals of the Passion of Christ from A.D. 200-2004," is a slide-lecture by Sheila E. McGinn, Ph.D., professor of Biblical Studies and Early Christianity at John Carroll University.  The presentation will explore a series of representations of the passion and crucifixion of Christ from the earliest known examples to the recent portrayal in the Mel Gibson film, “The Passion of the Christ.”

The presentation will take place on March 29, 2004, at 7:30 p.m. on the campus of John Carroll University.
Who: Shelia McGinn, Ph.D. is a professor in the Religious Studies department at John Carroll University.  She teaches courses on a wide variety of New Testament topics and has presented frequent academic papers on the New Testament Gospels, the Pauline Letters, and on the New Prophecy or “Montanist” movement.  Her doctoral thesis was a study, from a feminist perspective, of the rise of ecclesiastical patriarchy in the second century Pauline traditions.  Dr. McGinn received her B.A. in History and Literature of Religions from Northwestern University, her M.A. in Theology from the University of Dallas and her Ph.D. from Northwestern University where she was a part of the joint program in Religious and Theological Studies with Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

Dr. McGinn is the author of numerous scholarly articles and books which include studies of Paul’s letter to the Romans, “1 Cor 11:10 and the Ecclesial Authority of Women;” “Galatians 3:26-29 and the Politics of the Spirit;” the women in Matthew’s Passion-Resurrection story; The Acts of Thecla; and the Montanist Oracles.  She has authored a commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, a bibliography of twentieth-century research into the Book of Revelation, popular articles on the “Left Behind” series, forgiveness, and issues relating to women in the New Testament, and is currently developing a history of Christianity’s first hundred years.
