National German Honor Society
The
National German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha, seeks to recognize
excellence in the study of German and to provide an incentive for
higher scholarship. The Society aims to promote the study of the
German language, literature, and civilization and endeavors to emphasize
those aspects of German life and culture which are of universal value
and which contribute to man's eternal search for peace and truth.

The German Section of the Department of Classical &
Modern Languages & Cultures cordially invites all eligible Sophomores,
Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate Students to apply for membership in
Delta Phi Alpha, National German Honor Society, Lambda Delta Chapter,
at John Carroll University.
The purpose of this Chapter, among others, is two fold:
Regular membership is open to Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and
Graduate Students who meet the requirements. Honorary Memberships
are also available upon recommendation of the Chapter. Membership
applications are available after January 1, and induction ceremonies
for the Neophytes are usually scheduled for the Spring semester
of the academic year.

John Carroll University’s Chapter of the National German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha, is now accepting applications from prospective regular members.
The purposes of this Chapter among others, are: 1) to honor those who attain excellence in the study of the German language and in the study of literature and culture of the Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and 2) to encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of German culture in Germany and the literature and culture of Austria and Switzerland.
Requirements for Regular Membership are:
1. Qualifications for student membership shall be as follows: (a) A minimum of two (2) years of college or university German or their equivalent with the attainment of sophomore standing and an official registration in an advanced course or its equivalent or corresponding advanced placement. (b) A minimum average standing of B+ or its equivalent in all German courses taken. (c) A minimum of B- or its equivalent in all courses of study at the college and university level. (d) Indication of continued interest in the study of German language and literature.
2. Membership shall not be denied to any student because of his/her race, creed, or color, nor shall any student be admitted to membership on the basis of his/her race, creed, or color.
3. Graduate students may be admitted to regular active membership if they fulfill the above requirements.
4. The initiation ceremony for 2009 will take place Wednesday, April 1 at 4:30 pm, in the Jardine Room.
