The French Section of the Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Cultures cordially invites all eligible Undergraduate and Graduate Students to apply for membership in Pi Delta Phi, National French Honor Society, Kappa Eta Chapter, at John Carroll University.

The purpose of this Chapter, among others, is two fold: to honor those who attain excellence in the study of the French language and in the study of the literature and culture of the French-speaking peoples; to encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of French culture in France and its impact in the French-speaking countries.

Regular membership is open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students who meet the requirements. Associate and Honorary Memberships are also available to Francophiles upon recommendation of the Chapter. Membership applications are available after January 1, and induction ceremonies for the Neophytes are usually scheduled for the Spring semester of the academic year.

John Carroll University’s KAPPA ETA Chapter of the National French Honor Society, PI DELTA PHI, is now accepting applications from prospective regular members.

Pi Delta Phi was founded as a departmental honor society at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1906. After twenty years as a local chapter, Pi Delta Phi declared itself the National French Honor Society and chartered the Beta Chapter at the University of Southern California in 1925. The Society was admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967. At the present time, it numbers more than 330 Chapters established at representative public and private colleges and universities in almost every state, as well as two representative chapters at the American Universities in Paris and Aix-en-Provence in France. ARTICLE II PURPOSE
The purpose of this society shall be (1) to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and its literature; (2) to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americans for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world; (3) to stimulate and encourage French cultural activities.

ARTICLE III MOTTO
The motto of this society is: Probaínomen Diakritoi Philogálatoi which means “Avançons, amis fidèles de la culture française.”

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

There are two categories of membership: regular and honorary.
Regular members include graduate and undergraduate students who shall be nominated in recognition of their academic achievement in at least one semester or quarter of upper division French, with a minimum GPA of 3.00 in French. Graduate students who are candidates for an advanced degree in French are eligible for regular membership.
Honorary members include: the French faculty of the sponsoring institution; members of the faculty at large, diplomats and community leaders who have shown a strong support of French cultures.

National dues for regular members are $30.00. Each member receives the official key and a certificate, indicating lifetime membership in the organization.

The initiation ceremony for 2009 took place on Wednesday, April 15. Parents and other family members, friends, and all members were cordially invited to attend. Initiations are conducted generally once a year in the spring semseter. The date for 2010 is TBA.
