Our secondary textbook is God: The Evidence, by Patrick Glynn. This is a vigorous and controversial defense of belief in God, based largely on recent scientific discoveries.

This exercise is on the book's Introduction (pages 1-20), which talks about the state of belief in God in the world today -- and about the author's personal journey from atheism to theism.

Belief in God in America

Despite the fact that the great majority of Americans believe in God (about 94% according to recent Gallup surveys), our intellectual culture has been dominated by skepticism about religion.

Glynn argues that the low regard for religion among intellectuals is in the process of changing -- and that recent discoveries in science, medicine, and other fields are giving a powerful and almost incontestable case for belief in the soul, the afterlife, and God. He illustrates this change by talking about his own journey from atheism to faith.
