Religion G3: Pargetter - Assessment

Directions: Read to the bottom (scrolling
if necessary); then click "forward =>."

Suppose that Ann believes in God on the basis of a felt experience of God, in the manner suggested by Plantinga. How should we assess the rationality of Ann's belief? Pargetter suggests that we ask:
    (1) Are Ann's experiential beliefs normally reliable?
    (2) Do Ann's special circumstances undermine the reliability of her religious experience? and
    (3) Is Ann's resulting belief system reasonable on holistic grounds (consistency, explanatory potential, usefulness to her life, etc.)?
This exercise deals with a reading from Pargetter in our anthology (pages 342-8 of Philosophy of Religion: Selected Readings (second edition), edited by Peterson, Hasker, Reichenbach, and Basinger).
