Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences!  The College of Arts and Sciences is the oldest and largest component of John Carroll University, home to the liberal arts and sciences that characterize our University’s liberal and Jesuit education.

Every undergraduate at John Carroll begins in the College of Arts and Sciences, no matter that student’s eventual major.  In the College of Arts and Sciences, especially through our Core Curriculum, students receive an important grounding in critical thinking, skilled expression, cultural understanding, and awareness of how knowledge inter-relates across fields.  Students build upon that core when they pursue their major.

The College of Arts and Sciences is home to 3 degrees (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Arts in Classics), and 16 departments offering 31 majors and 28 minors.  Students can also explore interdisciplinary concentrations when their interests span more than one field, including business.

Our goal in College of Arts and Sciences is to assist students in exploring themselves and the world through a liberal education, defined by the Association of American Colleges and Universities as an education that “empowers individuals with broad knowledge and transferable skills, and a strong sense of values, ethics, and civic engagement.”

Employers also value such education.  As AAC&U’s research has found in College Learning for the New Global Century, a large number of employers expressed the wish for students to receive more training in liberal education areas: 82% in science and technology; 76% in teamwork in diverse settings; 72% in global issues; and 73% in critical thinking and analytical reasoning.
