  What is the Speaker's Bureau

The Civic Engagement Project at John Carroll provides students who have participated in service learning, community service, campus leadership, electoral politics, and immersion programs with an opportunity to reflect and share those experiences with the greater John Carroll community through a speaker's bureau.

Civic engagement is the active participation in the public life in an informed, committed manner. It creates compassionate citizens who are dedicated to working toward a more just society, an integral part of the Jesuit mission.

Students who are involved in experiential learning feel more connected to and responsible for their communities, both local and global. They understand the meaning of democracy at the grass roots level. Through a structured reflection process, students develop greater awareness of how learning outside the classroom enhances their curricular experience. Students come to a better

understanding of their own learning through these discussions with their peers and often motivate their fellow students to become engaged. Civically engaged students enrich course content, concepts, and theories using personal accounts.

The integration of students' civic experiences into courses helps students understand and participate in the democratic process. As a result, students become more knowledgeable, self-confident, active, and engaged citizens.

Examples of civic engagement projects include:

  • teaching migrant workers English phrases
  • mentoring/tutoring youth in Cleveland's neighborhoods
  • bringing fair trade coffee to campus
  • interning in Washington DC
  • registering voters in a get out the vote campaign
  • building a community garden for senior citizens in an urban neighborhood
  • leading student organizations and teams on campus
