Fr. Lihvar
Guestbook and Memories

B.A. in Classics, JCU Class of 1991. My condolences to the family and friends of Fr. Lihvar. I greatly value all that I learned. ad majorem Dei gloriam. Requiescat in pacem.

David Marques '91

Fr. Lihvar was one my professors and an outstanding master of the Classics. More importantly he was proud of his faith as a Catholic, proud to be a priest, and a proud veteran. He never waivered in his faith because he knew there were absolute truths. As a Classicist and Christian, his life was about truth.

Whom did Apollo shoot with his arrow? Why Ismenus, of course.

I did not personally know Fr. Lihvar but I knew he was inspirational to many others. He will be missed!

Fr. Lihvar was a great person as well as a great teacher. He valued quality over quantity and the spirit over the letter of the law. I will always remember his exhausting attention to details of grammar and language, yet his insistence upon standing back and looking at the whole literary work we students were studying at the time. Yes, the few of us who studied classical languages -- at a time when they were not in style -- will always remember his quiet, yet firm admonition not to memorize a text but to understand how it works. Father Lihvar also understood that education was not just about books and papers but about people and living. When the granddaddy of the department, Fr. Millor, was in the hospital gravely ill, Fr. Lihvar called me up and offered to take me to the hospital to visit my beloved, cantankerous taskmaster before he died. I still cherish Fr. Millor's rosary, which Fr. Lihvar made sure I received as a remembrance. Thank you, Father Lihvar, for the education you gave me and for your humanity. I hope we can meet again in the Otherworld and wrangle over Vergil's, Horace's, and Tacitus' sentences!

Fr. Lihvar changed my life the day he called to tell me I was the new Castellano Scholar. I remember that phone conversation so well because I recognized, in that moment, that my world would be transformed through the opportunity he was offering me. I was and continue to be deeply impressed by his lifelong enthusiasm for learning and growing, even throughout his sickness. I am deeply grateful for the role he played in my life. I will miss him, as I miss the days I was a student in his class. I will remember him by trying to follow his example of learning and scholarship throughout my life. Frater, ave atque vale.

I took a special topics Latin course with Fr. Lihvar in the fall of 2001. The wisdom he imparted is still dear to my heart this day. He epitomized the term "people's priest" and was a tell-it-as-it-is confessor.

I'll never forget the day that he appeased a rowdy student by saying, "Well then, I suppose it could be ablative or dative." Ha-ha! What a riot!

He shall be dearly missed but fondly remembered. God rest his soul.

I did not get the opportunity to know Fr. Lihvar during my tenure at JCU but from the detailed write up about him, it is apparent he was an outstanding person dedicated to carrying out the Jesuit doctrine. With that written, God bless the soul of a good man.

Rest in peace. I will pray for you.

I had Fr. Lihvar for Greek and he was a great teacher. He will be missed by many. Thank God for him and all of the other Jesuits who shaped our education in so many wonderful ways at John Carroll. May he rest in peace.

Thanks for your kindnesses, Frank. May the Lord give you his own peace and grace and glory, "et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem."

Claude Pavur, S.J.

To my brother Fr. Robert Niehoff, the Jesuit Society, and Fr. Lihvar's family.

When our brother, Robert Niehoff, S.J., became your president, my sister, Pat Hague, and I, Mary Ann Mahurin, came for the celebration. During that time we spent some time eating, some cooking, and some drinking coffee and talking with Fr. Frank Lihvar. He shared recipes and had a beautiful smile.

We are joined by our brother, Archie Haase, in sending our peace and prayers to each of you during this time of sorrow, sadness, and the joy of Fr. Frank going home to be with Our Father in heaven.

God Bless.
Love and Prayers,
Pat, Mary Ann, and Archie

As a teacher now, I appreciate how Fr. Lihvar pushed me to be my best.
