Leadership and Service

Leadership: Part of the Culture

The true college experience is found not just by going to class and studying, but by getting involved and meeting other people. John Carroll's culture of leadership fosters the growth of the individual by allowing you to develop your leadership skills in a variety of different ways. This is just another way that JCU strives to develop the whole person - not just academically, but spiritually, personally, and professionally as well.

There are countless ways to develop your leadership potential at Carroll. Apply to be an Orientation leader or Streak Week Advising & Transition (SWAT) Team member to welcome all of our new students to campus. Run for a term on the Student Union Executive Board or Senate. Be a leader for one of the many immersion experiences or retreat offerings. Apply to be a Resident Assistant or to be on the leadership team of the Relay For Life. Run for an elected position within any of our 100 student organizations. Play your way to become a captain of one of our varsity athletic teams. Step up and be a leader in the classroom, taking charge for group projects or leading candid classroom discussions. Develop your leadership skills through any of the leadership programs offered through the Office of Student Activities or attend the leadership lecture series and hear directly from Cleveland area CEOs and other senior executives. Strive to be a leader in all you do!

Service: A Defining Element

As a Jesuit institution, we also value the act of service. Service to others is an important part of the history of the Jesuits and of John Carroll and our students carry out this tradition daily. From tutoring, to immersion experiences, to building Habitat for Humanity houses, to giving fellowship to the homeless with the Labre Project, our students are out in the world and making a difference.

Students have the ability to engage in a wide range of activities, including service learning, volunteer service, immersion experiences, or one-time service events or programs. Take part in the Streak Week Service Project, Make a Difference Day, Cultivating Community, or Earthfest at the Zoo. Get involved with social justice work like promoting Fair Trade or protesting the School of the Americas. Apply for an internship through the Poverty & Solidarity Program. Run or walk in the Footprints for Fatima 5k. Raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. There are so many opportunities, it's impossible to list them all!
