More than 120 John Carroll University donors, faculty and staff gathered on a recent, balmy October night for “An Evening of Appreciation.” The event, which included dinner and a short program, celebrated and thanked JCU’s most-generous donors. By all accounts, it was an enormous success.

“Thank you for your enduring support of John Carroll University, for helping students realize their dreams, and for being part of our Evening of Appreciation,” said President Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., in his opening remarks. “John Carroll is blessed to have you as her ambassadors. Thank you for helping us tell our story.” Fr. Niehoff also provided an update on philanthropic activities, including the Ohio Access Initiative for students from Ohio families with annual incomes of less than $40,000.

Barbara S. Schubert, ’62, ’67G, ’80G; member, JCU Board of Directors, and 2007 recipient of the prestigious John Carroll University Alumni Medal, spoke about why she and her husband, John, are long-time supporters of the university and its Catholic, Jesuit mission.

“John Carroll means positive, good things to all of us,” Mrs. Schubert said. “To me, JCU represents hope in a world where it is sometimes difficult to find hope.”

The evening’s brightest star was JCU senior Rosemary Stanitz-Skove, recipient of the Patricia Relyea Boland/Ernst & Young Scholarship for Women in Business, the Albert J. DeGulis Endowed Scholarship, Freeman Foundation/ASIAN Network Grant and the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Award.

As a beneficiary of donor support, Stanitz-Skove was invited to speak to the group and share memories and images from her life-changing journey in 2006 to Tibet. She traveled with four other JCU students and faculty, led by Dr. Paul Nietupski, professor of Asian and Religious Studies, who has made more than 20 trips to that exotic corner of the world.

“What you have done for, and given to, John Carroll University is truly remarkable, and being a direct recipient of your gifts, I humbly offer you my sincerest appreciation,” Stanitz-Skove said. “Without your generosity, I would never be able to engage the world as I have done and will continue to do.”
