More than 85 John Carroll University alumni wrestlers, members of the 2009-2010 John Carroll wrestling team, parents, friends, and staff gathered October 10 at the University RecPlex to dedicate the David R. Meuse Wrestling Room. The dedication included a short program and a luncheon.
As most of you know, this project has been several years in the making, said Doreen Riley, vice president for University Advancement. To see it come to fruition is particularly special for the two longtime coaches who spearheaded the effort: Tony DeCarlo ’66G and Kerry Volkmann 71, ’78G.
David Meuse 67, the rooms namesake and a lead benefactor, was not able to attend due to two prior family commitments, but sent the following message: My education at John Carroll has served me so well, not only in business, but also in my community work. I have a strong belief in value-oriented leadership focusing on family, community, and business.
I learned those values at John Carroll. I was happy to be part of the original wrestling team at John Carroll and to be coached by Tony DeCarlo. He is a terrific coach and more importantly a wonderful human being who cares about people.
Our family wants you to know that we care deeply about the University and are proud to be part of the John Carroll family, Mr. Meuse said.
Chad Gross 81, supporter of the wrestling renovation, John Carroll Hall of Fame member, Division III All-American and National Champion wrestler, spoke at the event about his time at John Carroll. I recall many late, lonely nights running extra stairs and climbing what I thought were the longest ropes ever, Mr. Gross said. I am sure the current wrestling team may not be happy having to start and end practice running those stairs. But one thing has always been true win or lose JCU wrestlers are always in great shape!
The program concluded with a ribbon cutting by Ben Adams 10, wrestling captain and his teammates.
