JCU Donor Scholarships

Through the generosity of many John Carroll alumni and friends who have forged the path before you, JCU is able to offer a variety of different awards that help keep John Carroll University affordable for our students.  Various scholarships may require a separate application or interview process. Beyond those listed below, there are several other scholarships made available due to the generosity of Alumni donors. Students that meet the criteria for these scholarships will automatically be considered.

Charles S. & Murial A. Zodrow Akron Area Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students residing in the Akron area who have a minimum GPA of a 2.8 or are in the top 25% of their class.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application form with essay requirement. Deadline: March 1

Where to apply:

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic merit, demonstrated leadership, and financial need.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $1000 scholarship awarded per year; renewable for three years. No repayment is necessary.

Alumni Board Scholarship

Who may apply:

Children of an alumnus/a who have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application form with essay requirement. Deadline: March 1

Where to apply:

Submit required application form (pdf) or contact Rebecca Dinnen in the Office of Admission at rdinnen@jcu.edu.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Winner selected by a committee consisting of alumni board members.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $3500 scholarship awarded per year; renewable for three years. No repayment is necessary.

Steve Burchyns Scholarship

Who may apply:

Children, grandchildren and/or step-children of a Diplomatic Secret Service (DSS) Special Agent, active, retired or deceased, who have a minimum GPA of 2.8.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application form required.
Deadline: March 1

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic excellence, student involvement and financial need.

Central Ohio (Columbus) Area Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students from the greater Columbus area who have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application form with essay required. Deadline: March 1

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Winner selected by scholarship committee consisting of Columbus area alumni.

Chicago Club Leadership Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students residing in the greater Chicago area who have a minimum GPA of 2.75.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application form and interview required. Deadline: March 12

Where to apply:

Submit required application form (pdf) or contact Rebecca Dinnen in the Office of Admission at rdinnen@jcu.edu.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Demonstrated leadership, academic merit, essay and interview with scholarship committee. Must keep a 3.0 GPA to renew.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $5000 scholarship awarded per year; renewable for three years. No repayment required.

Class of 1964 Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students who have a relative that was a member of the Class of 1964 at John Carroll University.  

Type of application form required and deadline date:

A letter expressing interest in award including relationship to JCU Class of 1964 graduate. Annual reminders are sent to Class of 1964 alumni in January.

Where to apply:

Send letter to Rebecca Dinnen in the Office of Admission or via e-mail at rdinnen@jcu.edu by February 22.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic merit, other achievements, and/or financial need.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $3000 scholarship awarded per year; renewable for three years. No repayment required.

Muer Detroit Club Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students residing in the greater Detroit area who have a minimum GPA of 2.75.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application form with essay required. Deadline: March 1

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Erie Cathedral Prep Scholarship

Who may apply:

Graduates of Erie Cathedral Preparatory High School.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application form required. 
Deadline: March 1

Where to apply:

Submit required application form (pdf) or contact Rebecca Dinnen in the Office of Admission at rdinnen@jcu.edu. May also obtain application form from high school college counseling office.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic excellence and student involvement. Winners selected
by scholarship committee consisting of Erie Cathedral Prep alumni who graduated from John Carroll University.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $1000 scholarship awarded per year; renewable for three years. No repayment required.

William J. Henkel Scholarship

Who may apply:

Student graduating from St. Vincent/St. Mary’s high school.

Type of application:

FAFSA

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic merit and financial need.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

$4500 per year; renewable for up to three years. Awarded every four years: next available award will be offered in 2011. No repayment required.

Kevin Thomas Hurley Scholarship (Benedictine)

Who may apply:

Students graduating from Benedictine High School.

Type of application:

No application required, FAFSA recommended.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Character, academic merit and financial need.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

$500 per year; renewable for up to three years. No repayment required.

Andrew McCarthy Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students who reside on the east coast and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or are in the top 25% of their class.  Also, must be in extracurricular activities. 

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application with essay required. Deadline: March 1

Where to apply:

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic excellence and student involvement. Winners selected by scholarship committee consisting of former classmates of Andrew McCarthy. Must keep a 2.5 GPA to renew.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $2500 scholarship awarded per year; renewable for three years. No repayment required.

Dr. Thomas Picard Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students who reside in the Ashtabula or Mansfield areas and plan to study science.

Type of application form required and deadline date:

No application required, if interested please contact Rebecca Dinnen at rdinnen@jcu.edu. FAFSA recommended.

Where to apply:

Please contact Rebecca Dinnen in the Office of Admission.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic merit and financial need.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $2000 scholarship awarded for freshman year only; not renewable.

Pittsburgh Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students residing in the Pittsburgh area. 

Type of application form required and deadline date:

FAFSA, separate application required.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Financial need, academic merit and demonstrated leadership activities.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

$2000 per year; renewable for four years. No repayment required.

Ted Ryan Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students residing in the Chicago area. 

Type of application form required and deadline date:

Separate application with essay required.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Winners selected by a committee consisting of Chicago area alumni.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

Amount varies; renewable for three years. Awarded every four years; next available award will be offered to 2009 high school graduates.

Jankowski-Toomey Scholarship

Who may apply:

Students that are ex-military service personnel (usually a transfer student).

Type of application form required and deadline date:

FAFSA and letter to Rebecca Dinnen in the Office of Admission or via e-mail at rdinnen@jcu.edu by May 1.

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Financial need and merit.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

Amount varies $500-$1000 per year.

Vietnam Veteran Scholarship

Who may apply:

Children or grandchildren of a veteran that served in the military during the Vietnam Era from 1963-1975.  If no candidates found we will consider children or grandchildren of any military veteran. Awarded every four years: next available award will be offered to 2011 high school graduates.

Separate application required.
Deadline: March 1

Basis upon which aid is granted:

Academic merit and financial need.

Annual range and terms of repayment:

One $2500 scholarship per year; renewable for three years.
Awarded every four years: next available award will be offered to 2011 high school graduates. No repayment is required.
