THE HON. STANLEY J. GLOD ’58

Stanley Joseph Glod is an international consultant specializing in aerospace, defense industries, national security, international trade, and comparative law issues. And that’s just scratching the surface of his distinguished career.

Among other things, in 1988, the retired Colonel of the U.S. Army Reserves and graduate of the National Defense University was appointed Chairman and Chief Judge of the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission of the U.S. by President Ronald Reagan , with U.S. Senate confirmation, and served throughout the administration of George H. W. Bush. Stan also served as The Boeing Company’s vice president for Central Europe, and resided in Warsaw, Poland, for five years, with responsibility for 11 countries. He was previously in private law practice during the 1970s and ’80s.

Stan has been actively involved in the Catholic Church, including service on the Steering Committee of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA; the Catholic Diocese of Arlington (VA); the Board of Visitors of the Columbus School of Law of The Catholic University of America; the Legacy Society of Georgetown University; and the Magis Legacy Society – the latter, since 1994.

His service to John Carroll is equally noteworthy, including former vice president and president of the JCU National Alumni Association – the first non-Cleveland resident to serve in that capacity. He remains an active and committed alumnus, hosting Masses and receptions with his wife, Linda, in their home near Mt. Vernon, Virginia. As a John Carroll student, Stan was selected for membership in Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor fraternity, and remained active in nearly 20 campus organizations, from freshman football and ROTC, to the Carroll News and Glee Club.

He holds a law degree from Georgetown University, and a doctorate in comparative law following combined studies in Germany at the University of Munich and Ukrainian Free University, and has taught at several colleges and universities.

“Of all those academic institutions,” Stan says, “John Carroll stands out both as an institution and a home that established a certain threshold for responsibility, discipline, and religion. And though we may give those things short shrift in earlier years, you begin to realize that in this ever-increasingly secularized world, institutions like John Carroll stand out in your life.

For his past and present involvement in and dedication to the University, his outstanding professional leadership, and for his life of leadership and service, The John Carroll Alumni Association is pleased to award Stanley J. Glod our 2009 Alumni Medal.
