Interesting facts

It was 43 years ago, the fall of 1959, that most of us first set foot on the JCU campus. Remember those times...

Blue-and-gold Freshman beanies everywhere ... Hell Week, and mud head-to-toe after the medicine ball contest on the athletic field with the sophomores ... memorizing the Alma Mater and the Fight Song ... cassocked Jebs everywhere -- particularly the omnipresent Fr. Joe Muenzer, our Dean of Men, and Fr. Nick Predovich, prefect of Dolan Hall ... "signing out" of the dorm "to study at the library" ... What library? It was just an overheated space on the third floor of the Ad. Bldg. where you had to ask for every book at the front desk -- no open stacks.

Weekdays you had to be in the dorm by 8:30 p.m. (unless given permission to be out) and lights out in your room by 11 p.m. Repeat violators were "campused" for a weekend or two or hauled before head prefect or assistant dean Morgie Lavin ... Dan Toole "The Laundryman," giving us our first lesson in entrepreneurship ... gravel-throated football coach John Ray and crisp gridiron Saturdays ... mixers with the lovelies from Notre Dame, Ursuline and Lake Erie College ... the massive Friday drills at the "West Point of the Transportation Corps" ... a sudsy draft or two at the beer parlors of Lee, Taylor or Mayfield ...

No doubt you have a favorite memory to add.

We'll be "waking up the echoes" of those memorable times at the Class of 1963's 40th Reunion on campus from June 12-15, 2003. Mark down those dates now. Your friends in the Class are counting on seeing you and your spouse. You will also get to know better other members of the Class whom you may not have known very well back then. You'll meet some great people!

We hope you make it for all four days (Thursday evening through Sunday noon), but any time you can come your presence will be welcome. Packages range from $200 per person for the entire weekend's food, lodging, and activities down to $50 per person for Saturday evening only. The Alumni Office (1-800-736-ALUM) will work with you to accommodate whenever you can be there.

Some facts that may surprise you ...
  • The school's operating budget is $76 million annually.
  • The endowment is $132 million.  Ranked against peer schools we're at about the 70th percentile.
  • Tuition and fees this year are $19,000 - about average for a private four-year university.
  • To help pay the bill, three out of four JCU students will receive need-based aid; that aid will total $22 million. And every student in effect receives an "alumni scholarship" since gifts from alumni, through Committed to Carroll, the Annual Fund, help to meet operating expenses.
  • The school raised $24 million in total gifts last year, mostly for the $60-million science center under construction and for other capital projects. Gifts to support operations declined compared with the previous year.
