With nearly 75% of John Carroll University students participating in various intramural and recreational activities and some 650 male and female student athletes competing in 21 varsity sports, the growing number of athletes on campus has far outpaced our facilities.

Built in 1969, Wasmer Field was constructed to support just five men's varsity sports teams and less than 150 athletes. Increasing usage and demand resulted in the need to upgrade unsafe wooden bleachers in the stadium and to provide more locker rooms, coaching offices, and a varsity weight training center. Upgrades to the indoor athletic complex became essential, including a new gym floor, bleachers, backboards, locker rooms and other renovations.

Because of these needs, the university embarked on the first ever Campaign for Athletics--which has certainly improved the quality of our athletic facilities! The project was completed in two phases, with the gym renovation first and then the Don Shula Stadium construction, completed in 2003.

We are working hard to raise the dollars needed to finalize the funding for these projects. Now that the Don Shula Stadium has been built and the gym renovation has been completed, there seems to be no doubt that we have some of the premiere Division III venues in the country! If you would like to help in the ongoing effort to provide the best athletic and educational facilities for John Carroll students, please click here.
