fall 2008

The news of Fr. Joseph Schell’s passing connected two class members with memories of the past – Dick Olivier (day hop) and Tom Feely (dorm student). Dick remembers having Fr. Schell for logic and metaphysics, etc. while Tom recalls Fr. Schell as Prefect at Pacelli Hall, where he resided. Tom’s daughter is a nun at the Notre Dame Mother House in Chardon, OH, home of NDCL (Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School), where Dick’s three daughters attended school and grandson is currently playing JV football. They shared memories of Mr. John Carpenter, Dr. Bender and their family histories from high school to their grandkids. Its great that two class members meet and share memories via the internet some 51 years after graduation, thanks to Fr. Schell – God is good! ... Attending the Gray Streaks (JCU graduates of over 50 years) dinner on Saturday evening of Reunion 2008, were Vicki and Al Lucas, Pat and Tom Kasper, Maureen and Dick Huberty, and Rose Marie and Sal Felice. As a National Alumni Board Member, Reunion 2008 gave me the opportunity to attend several mini-lectures I missed at our reunion. The mini-class lectures I attended were: ROTC: Transforming Today’s Students into Tomorrow’s Leaders, Multi-Cultural Affairs at JCU, and The Catholic and Jesuit Identity of JCU by Dr. Paul V. Murphy, director of the Institute of Catholic Studies. I was impressed by the lectures, but particularly inspired in the update and emphasis of Jesuit Catholic ideals available for the total educational experience to the talents, needs and personalities of the JCU students. I recommend you check this out for your grandkids planning for college. I was “re-energized” in our University and proud to be part of the JCU team. ... On a sad note, Joseph A. Felty passed away in mid-May. Joe had retired from Lake Catholic High School after nearly 50 years as a teacher and guidance counselor. In addition, the JCU magazine listed deaths for Glenn Drake (11/27/07) and James Dunn (2/07/08). Our condolences to their families and May they rest in peace! ... In early July, the Joe Luby family (14 in all) returned from a 19-day adventure in Alaska. They experienced a wide assortment of wild animals via sea and land. Weather was great and the view of Mt. McKinley was outstanding! ... On Independence Day weekend, Georgia and Jim Gasper visited Sacred Heart church in Galveston, TX, where they had been married. This church was re-constructed by the Jesuits after the Great Galveston Storm of 1900 that killed over 600 people. The church bulletin contained an article on Archbishop John Carroll, a priest and patriot (and our University’s namesake), who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. The article also spoke of his brother, Charles Carroll, one of the wealthiest men to sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Charles signed the document “Charles Carroll of Carolltown” in defiance of the British. Jim has been elected a political official of Palmer Mud District No. 2 of Fort Bend County, TX. ... Did You Know – In 1953, or 1954, Dick Murphy had the privilege of being on stage with the Metropolitan Opera Company’s production of AIDA as a “spear holder.” ... Homecoming weekend 2008 is September 26-28. Come back to Carroll and check the progress your University is achieving and meet the new administrative staff – I guarantee you will be impressed! By the way, JCU is playing Heidelberg in football on Saturday, September 27 – I’ll see you there! God bless, Sal

Dan Collins informs me that Chuck Guthrie had rotator cuff surgery in early 2008 and was recuperating at home in Gainesville, Ga. Send Chuck a note - CHUCKPAT@BELLSOUTH.NET - he would love hearing from you. ... G. Richard Olivier enjoys the class notes; however, as a “day hop” he was not familiar with many “dorm students,” due to demanding work schedules while attending classes, as was the case with the majority of the JCU students at that time. (NOTE: As a “day hop” myself, I can clearly relate to Dick’s views. Hopefully, in the near future, the University will acknowledge same and address the “day hop dilemma”). ... Bart Merella was pleased to lunch with Fr. Niehoff and Doreen Riley in Washington, D.C., in late February. Bart’s son-in-law, Ted Steiner ’93, recently began working at Carroll in the Center for Service and Social Action with Dr. Peggy Finucane ’80 in organizing class related immersion service projects. According to Jack Szabo, Mickey, as he was known while at Carroll, played in “The Jack Szabo All-Stars Band. His wife, Lois, died last October.Mike is survived by a daughter and four siblings. ... On November 28, Jerry apparently tripped and fell and lay unconscious on the floor of his condo in San Destin, Fla., for fourteen hours before being found and rushed to the hospital. He was revived briefly and then went into a coma. Jerry never did regain consciousness. He passed away peacefully on the morning of December 15. A funeral service was held in Destin, Fla., where Jerry was cremated. A Mass, burial of his ashes and luncheon were held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Chicago on December 28. ... fall 2007 In preparing my last column for year 2007, I can’t help reflecting on what a busy and emotional year this has been in so many ways. Hopefully, 2008 will be the best ever. Please keep me informed on your busy lives. ... Frank Singel had a reservation made for our 50th Class Reunion in June, however, two days earlier he was forced to cancel to have surgery. Frank also missed his high school annual reunion. He is alumni president (classes 1931 through 1966) – the school no longer exists. At dinner Saturday evening, it was reported erroneously that Chris had “heart problems” at the airport and was hospitalized. Chris is well and disappointed that he missed being with his “old” friends. ... Reunion 2007, our 50th, is history! As promised, we all had a great time – only the perfect weekend passed so quickly. In addition, a number of milestones were achieved. Our class broke the “all-time” attendance record for a 50-year class with 87 members attending. Also, we exceeded our $350,000 Endowed Scholarship Fund goal with $368,672.60 of cash, pledges, projected market value and expected matching gifts. In addition, our class gift (money given to all designations of the University) totaled $323,247.98. (Note: My photos can be viewed on the JCU CONNECT web site). ... I am most grateful to the class reunion committee who worked very hard in making our 50th a truly special occasion. Special thanks to co-chairman, Chuck Novak, who worked diligently to get class members to “come back to Carroll.” There were a number who attended JCU reunion for very first. Also, many thanks to Dick Huberty, Jim Clark, Tom Moran, Dick Murphy, Jim Gasper and Bill Comiskey, plus all the other committee and individuals who helped “make it happen.” I wish to also acknowledge the JCU staff of Peter Bernardo ’67, Robert Kirschner and especially, Theresa Spada ’04 reunion coordinator, who tolerated the committee and “put it all together.” To all – THANK YOU! The only shadow over our 50th year party was the absence of the 100 deceased class members who were an integral part of our 50 year experience – we shall never forget them! God bless, Sal

fall 2006
Our Texas connection, Georgia and Jim Gasper have become good friends with Peggy and Tom Grace ’67, brother of Don Grace, in the Galveston and Houston area. ... Dick Olivier recently heard from his daughter-in-law that her uncle, Joe Nieser, has a lung ailment and could use some prayers. Joe was our class treasurer senior year. It is also the “last call” for meeting the $350,000 goal for our Class of 1957 Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund. As of mid-September, we were at approximately $250,000 or $100,000 short of our goal. As I recollect over these past 50+ years, it seems like things we did back in the ’50s were from another life. Whether you were fortunate enough to reside on the JCU campus, or struggle with your class schedule requirements while working in order to “get through” Carroll as a “day hop,” (like me) we all worked very hard through tough times to get where we are today. Whether or not you agree, John Carroll played a big part in making us what we are now. Some individuals have done much better than others and that’s great! It is now pay back time! I am aware that “financial giving” is a very personal and sensitive issue; however, we do have an obligation to our alma mater if it is to survive to continue providing the quality education that we received. In reviewing class giving over the past six years, I was amazed and shocked at those giving little or nothing back to John Carroll. Possibly you give to other worthwhile organizations or funds – you be the judge! Granted, there are various means to give and JCU can assist in ways that will benefit all parties concerned. ... For some of us, this may be our “last hurrah.” Known to date, some 98 class members have already gone to a “better place.” I apologize for being morbid and outspoken, but “wake up” class of 1957, we are not going to last forever – “open your hearts” and give something back in appreciation for what John Carroll has done for you! God bless, Sal

summer 2006
In April, I had the pleasure of dining with Richard Donahue and his wife, Erma, at the Annual Reserve Officers’ Association luncheon. Bart Merella, our class Deacon, was transferred from his current parish of St. Joseph on Capitol Hill to the Cathedral of St. Matthew. In addition, he is employed full-time as registrar for the Washington Theological Union, where preparation is being made for the new school president who is currently the chief of chaplains for the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps. Since Bart’s transfer to the cathedral, he has been very busy with numerous liturgical events. ... Jim Gasper underwent total left hip replacement surgery in mid-March. Tom Paulson ’87, son of our deceased classmate Peter Paulson, phoned me July 13th (Peter’s birthday) regarding our Class of 1957 Endowed Scholarship Fund. Tom wanted to donate to our scholarship fund, in honor of his dad, which would be “matched” by his company, Morgan Stanley. We appreciate his and all other contributors to our very worthwhile scholarship fund. Our goal is to raise $350,000 by June 2007. ... Note: In the previous John Carroll magazine, I reported that John P. Lynch and his wife had five children and nine grandchildren. It was brought to my attention that Jack’s wife had passed away 25-30 years ago. My sincere apologies go out to the Lynch family for my over-sight. God bless, Sal

spring 2006
The weekend following Father’s day June 2007 is the date you have to set aside to attend our gala 50th Class Reunion. We are planning on a BIG PARTY weekend – “it’s our time to shine.” We will have an exciting agenda for our spouses. I realize we have all become quite conservative in our old age and have a few aches and pains since graduation; however, we have not lost the desire to party with old friends and get updated on people and changes at JCU. There are 98 deceased class members, that we know of, that will not celebrate with us, but they will certainly be there in spirit. John Carroll “goes all out” to make each Reunion Weekend really special – don’t disappoint your class member friends or yourself – we plan to “break” the university’s golden attendance record ... and its FREE for the 50 year graduates. We highly encourage those that attended Carroll with us from 1953 through 1957 to also plan on joining us, whether or not they graduated with our class. ... John P. He now has six stents in that one artery. The Zenks are truly amazed at the progress of medical science. They planned to visit John and Ann Rae in Tucson, AZ, in April. In January 2000, Jim Gasper suggested to this reporter that consideration be given to setting-up an Endowed Scholarship Fund in the name of the late James Esther. A committee was formed and, after much discussion, it was decided to establish this fund in the name of all our deceased class members (98 to date). This fund was established to aide any JCU student who, because of a family crisis or other emergency, is experiencing financial difficulty and is in danger of not graduating. Tuition at JCU has been increasing about 7% each year, thus placing a tremendous burden -- especially on seniors. To date, our Class of 1957 Endowed Scholarship Fund, with earnings, is in excess of $171,000. This means we can award $8,000/per year to seniors facing the above crisis. Our fund has already helped seven seniors. Your committee is looking to increase this most worthwhile fund to $350,000 by June 2007. Kindly, support our scholarship with your generous gift now, or by Reunion 2007. With your continued support we are certain to make our goal and have a lasting memorial to our class that will benefit students for years to come and will reflect our class spirit and values.
