| fall 2008 | Dan (Samardzich) Summers and his wife, Jean, have been married for 32 years and now live in Florida after stops in Chicago, San Antonio, Pittsburgh and Richmond, OH. Dan and Jean have two children: Matthew (27) is a decorated Green Beret who graduated from Bucknell University and now is enrolled in Clemson’s graduate program in real estate development working on his MBA. Their daughter, Katie (26), is a graduate of Miami of Ohio. She spent three years on the Hill working for House, Ways and Means. She is now studying to be an attorney at the Vermont Law School while simultaneously earning her master’s in environmental law. After John Carroll, Dan began his professional career by running a fruit stand on Chicago’s South Side. At 25, he sold the stand and started working for a commercial real estate firm as a commissioned salesman until 1986. He left Chicago to manage real estate for a San Antonio savings and loan, and then moved to Pittsburgh in 1989 as executive vice president of Golden Triangle Management. In 1992 Dan started Madison Reality where he remained until he retired to his horse farm in Richmond, OH, in 1997. As it has been said, you “can’t keep them down on the farm.” Dan has un-retired and is now a partner with a Houston-based firm where he is responsible for negotiating acquisitions and arranges for the capital. Although he spends considerable time in “planes, trains, and automobiles,” he states he is loving life in the Sunshine State. ... Van Conway’s son, Matt, pitched his high school, Brother Rice, Bloomfield Hills, MI, to its third state baseball title this spring with a four hit, 8-0 victory over Saline. Attendees from the class of 1974 were me, Roger Hull, Ron Deneweth, John Clayton, Jim Cannan, Dan Conrad, Marc Haag, Ed Kelly, Bob Mangan, Mike Bergerson, Tom McCrystal, Tim McMahon, and Chris Schuba. From ’75 was Joe Samuelson; from ’72 Mark Pacelli, Marty Bergerson, Larry Ray, Pat Hogan and Sean McNicholas. Van reports efforts to rewrite the JCU memories over the weekend were basically unsuccessful but at least they tried. Van, one of the founders of Conway MacKenzie & Dunleavy, in Birmingham, MI, has been nationally recognized as an expert in turnaround financing and management consulting. As you may recall in the last column, Leo Grim’s wife was training for the Boston Marathon. Well, she finished in 3:41:02. Leo, Joy, and daughter Jill were interviewed by Fox TV. Look for - http://www.myfoxboston.com/myfox/MyFox/pages/sidebar_video.jsp?contentId=6355183&version=1&locale=EN-US - “Joy from Texas is running her first Boston marathon.” ... Their oldest son, Michael, works in Cleveland for a computer IT firm. ... I would like to conclude this issue with a message to Tim Russert’s wife, Maureen, and son, Luke. On behalf of the entire class of 1974, our prayers and thoughts are with you. Tim had a positive impact on many of us as an “upper classman” at John Carroll and as a friend and fellow alumni over the years. Tim will always be remembered. God bless. ... Dave |

| summer 2008 | Ed Kelly Jr., ran his second Marathon Des Sables (MDS) in Morocco and placed 329 out of the 801. The 152 miles was the longest in the history of the course and was one of the hottest years ever. The MDS, considered the toughest footraces on the planet, is a physical, emotional, and spiritual journey. In addition to carrying his own food, clothing, sleeping bag, medical supplies, and mandatory items (compass, flare, emergency blanket), Ed had to manage his water consumption which is rationed each day, food consumption, energy output, and emotional swings. Ed selected the following as inspiration for the race, “Not once will I whine, complain, or in any way express discontent, irrespective of what happens.” Ed ran to raise money for The Academy for Global Citizenship in Chicago. Many classmates made generous pledges in support of Ed’s efforts. If you would like to contribute, contact Ed - EJK@coyleasset.com. Visit JCU Connect - www.jcu.edu/jcuconnect - under the Class Notes section, click General to read Ed’s journal. It is inspiring! If you haven’t signed up for JCU Connect, this is a great reason to get connected! ... Leo Grim, and his wife, Joy, live in Houston. Our daughter, Kate ’98, and husband Jim Bongiorno were blessed with Bridget Hannah on April 1, and our youngest daughter, Macklin, will graduate from Fordham in May. ... Finally, with a little help from fellow alum, I was able to track down one of our class’s more humorous and well liked classmates. He lives in Aurora, Ohio, and Since 1992 has been a partner in a real estate appraisal firm serving local and national clients. As he states, “The good thing about real estate appraisal is that no one really has an idea what it is that we do, which spells good job security!” He is very proud of his two children. Son Rick graduated from Arizona State and is looking to start law school in Denver this fall. His daughter, Julie ’05, is a pediatric intensive care nurse at Akron Children’s Hospital. He loves golf but golf does not return that sentiment, still plays softball, loves to cook and claims to be a madman when it comes to pierogies, and stuffed cabbage. Who is this man of many talents and diehard Cleveland sports fan? None other than Rick Shina. Zorro, thanks for the update! ... Robby |

| spring 2008 | One of the great benefits of the Christmas cards we receive, are the wonderful holiday newsletters that often accompany them. It serves as a great source of material for this class columnist. One of the first cards received in December was from Val Street. Val “traveled the highways and byways” of America in 2007. Trips included NYC and Charleston. While in New York, Val saw a production of the “Color Purple,” and in Charleston, she acquired an original Gullah work from 95-year-old iron works craftsman, Phillip Simmons. Val summed up 2007 as a good year to have had so many opportunities to be able to serve “in the Lord’s vineyard!” ... Sheila and Jim Weitzel’s Christmas letter is always full of family info. To start out, Jimbo’s MG is still running fine and was a minimal expense to the family in 2007. Last March they took Erin (16) and Drew (13) to New Hampshire to visit family. As fate would have it, they experienced a Nor’easter with 14 inches of snow in 24 hours. It was Drew’s first experience with snow. That’s what happens when you grow up in Texas all of your life. Erin attends St. Agnes Academy, is a National Honor Society student and excels in golf. She wants to be a Long Horn instead of a Blue Streak! Drew is busy with Boy Scouts, baseball and football. Maybe he’ll be a Blue Streak? Jim rode the MS Bicycle ride from Houston to Austin in April raising money to find a cure for the disease. He has been re-elected to a four-year term on the Fairfax County, Va., School Board. Phil any chance you could find a formula for cooperative partisanship at the Federal level? You did such a great job at getting people to work together while you were in the JCU Student Union. I think there is higher calling for you in D.C. I think we could tap into John Marcus for, sorry, I digress! Phil and Chris’s daughters have obviously been influenced by their parents’ commitment to excellence. Nora is currently in NYC writing and doing research to finish her doctorate in Art History from Stanford. Erin is a practicing attorney with a law firm in Virginia. ... Joe Verostek has been VP of investment operations at BPU Investment for a year now. He really enjoys the work and the people he works with. In June, Mary Lynn (Crowley) Laughlin was recognized as one of Crain’s “Women of Note for 2007.” Mary Lynn is one of two partners in Lakepoint Investment Partners, an independent investment advisory firm based in downtown Cleveland. Over 200 parishioners and friends, along with his brother Gerry celebrated Mass with Fr. Gene, which was then followed by a receiving line and reception. And as to be expected, the JCU guests stayed and partied hardy to the very end. ... Molly and I visited Fr. Joe Schell, now living at Colombiere in Clarkson, MI. He looks great. We had a great conversation with him on a variety of topics. He still keeps up with what’s going on at Carroll, and is especially impressed with the number of events and programs the university now has with students, faculty and alumni volunteering their time back into their communities and overseas. As he said, the Campus Ministries have come a long way from when he started them back in the ’70s. ... Well that’s it for this column. I am sure there a few other women and men of note from the class of ’74. Don’t be bashful, send me a note and let’s share the good news. Hope you all had a great summer! Robby |

summer 2006 |
| Gratefully, Larry Meathe replied to my request from ‘70 – ‘71 Dolan 3rd floor T-Wing members and provided the following updates: Squeak (a.k.a. Frank Palermo) is the proud owner of a palatial estate in the lovely city of Hilton Head, NC. As Larry describes, Frank being the kind and generous person that he tells us he is, invited seven AKY frat brothers for a four night, long weekend of golf and recreation in April. The guest list included Frank’s older brother, John Palermo ‘71 (who was gifted with the truly correct nick name of “Noisy” -- he talks so much we seriously discussed putting him on a daily word limit); Mike (Niner) Nienstedt ’73 (who was the only smart player of the entire group and didn’t try to make his body act 21 years old again, so he only played 18 holes of golf a day versus the 36+ holes like the rest of the knuckleheads); Al (Bert) Altieri ’74 (who decided, for unknown reasons, to drive from Cleveland to Hilton Head, but was gracious enough to get there before all the others, with groceries, and prepare dinner; Joe (Jumpin’) Virostek ’74 (who served in a staff sergeant capacity organizing food lists, tee times, and meal schedules); and Mike (Fox) McShane ’74 (who still just takes one day at a time and doesn’t get bothered by much BUT is reported to snore like a truck driver). Everyone had a great time playing golf, or best summarized in a saying discovered by the boys at one of the tees: “You have to have a lot of balls to play golf like us.” ... I also received an e-mail from Bob Madden, from Auburn, OH. He and Mary (Richards), announced the marriage of their oldest son, Bob, in April. Alumni in attendance included Jeff Hokl and Rick Shina. Jeff’s wife, Pat, couldn’t make it in from Chicago to attend the ceremony, but she sent their youngest daughter, Kathleen, to make sure Jeff behaved (she was successful at her task). Rick lives a couple of miles from Bob, so the two of them have been able to spend a lot of time on the golf course this season. Bob and Mary’s oldest daughter, Jacqueline, is expecting their first grandchild this summer. In additional to his regular job, Bob will start his 11th year coaching high school football at Hudson High School with “Duch “ Narducci ’72 and he is still playing amateur baseball. Mary is administrative manager at a private country club, plays a lot of tennis, and, Bob proclaimed “as beautiful as ever.” ... I spoke with Ray Zammit ’73. His oldest daughter, Jenn, graduated from Miami of Ohio in 2005 and is a bond trader for 5/3 Bank in Southfield, MI. She commutes from Perrysburg, OH, everyday. Samantha graduated from St. Ursula this spring, and will start nursing school this fall at the University of Toledo. Ray’s wife, Toni, works 3-4 days a week as a dental hygienist. In 2004, they bought a commercial laundry business. He reports, “so far so good”. When he’s not running the business, he’s playing golf in the summer and is a high school wrestling referee during the winter. ... That’s it for this issue! Still in search of updates from ’70 – ’71 Dolanites! I’d rather fill this column with news from the class of ’74 than how the Tigers (with the best record in baseball at this writing) are doing! ... Hope everyone had a great summer and look forward to hearing from you this fall. Robby

spring 2006 |
| The last of the Super Bowl confetti has finally been cleared off the streets of the Motor City. Detroit adopted the Pittsburgh Steelers, their favorite “Bus,” Jerome Bettis, and hosted a world class event. As I write this column, both the Wings and Pistons prepare for runs at championship rings as they ended with the best season records in hockey and basketball. Too early to comment on the Tigers, so we’ll save that for the next column. ... Kevin Purcell, finally bit the bullet after 18 years in solo practice and joined the law firm of Smith and Condeni in downtown Cleveland. Kevin is certified by the Ohio State Bar Association as a specialist in Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law. Smith and Condeni is a medium-sized law firm primarily devoted to estate planning, wills and trusts. Kevin is married to Patti, a St. John College-Notre Dame graduate with a master’s in trauma nursing. Kevin, Patti, and his two step-sons, Brandon and Cory, live in Middleburg Heights. When he is not setting wills and trusts, playing dad and husband, Kevin can found strumming on his guitar and listening to the Moody Blues. ... On a sad note, the alumni office received an e-mail from Carol Dambach in Lodi, WI, telling of the passing of her husband Michael J. Dambach on March 8th. Michael died after an eight month battle with leukemia. In addition to Carol, Michael is survived by four sons, Michael, Mark, Jason and Thomas; and three grandchildren. The family acknowledged their gratitude of the hematology/oncology staff and nurses the University Hospital in Madison for their wonderful care and support of Michael. On behalf of the class of ’74, please accept our condolences and prayers. ... Out of the blue, I received an e-mail from Jeff Schaefer -- jtdjrs@att.net. Jeff and I met our freshman year at JCU while living in Dolan. Jeff was on the wrestling team and many a night, Jeff, Henry (don’t call me Hank) Schulte, Chris Nulle, Jim Weitzel, Bob Shannon, Larry Meathe, Terry Dwyer and Chuck Arida (sans the hammer) debated the issues of the day, drank a few 3.2 beers and held our own version of World Federation Wrestling. If memory serves me right, we also set the record for the most people on the top bunk before “The Russian” broke up the milestone! Jeff posed the often asked question “What happened to the old gang?” He’s been unsuccessful at tracking down his roommate, Ralph Srp. Well Dolanites, this sounds like a great “to do” -- everyone who lived on the third floor of Dolan 1970-71, send an update before the next alumni journal. A brief e-mail to me with a quick update and any story or event you remember from living in Dolan. ... Jeff has been living in Akron since 1972. He has his own remodeling business, big old redone house of his own and is a self proclaimed junk collector! He has lots of old pictures of many of the Dolan gang at the Rathskellar. Those would be fun to see! ... On a personal note, I am very proud of my wife Molly Gibbons Robinson ’75 for being one of this year’s Alumni Medal Winners. Molly has been one of the university’s best ambassadors since she left campus. She has been a class agent, alumni recruiter, board member, class gift chair, and just about anything else John Carroll has asked her to do. She has always practiced the Carroll tradition of “service for others.” Some local Detroit organizations would say she never met a volunteer request she never liked. Molly has never sought recognition, she just wants to do what she can to assist others. Her greatest vocation is being a great mom to our four children, Kate ’98, Brendan, Keenan and Macklin. We love you Molly! ... Have a great summer everyone. As always, don’t be bashful, proud or indifferent; drop me a line to include in the next column. Robby

winter 2006 |
| Greetings and Happy New Year to the Class of ’74! As I write, Detroit is preparing for Super Bowl XL. Since our wish for the Lions to play in the big game ended very early in the season, our next best wish is for mild weather so the out of town guests, sports fans, celebrities, and news media get a chance to enjoy the hospitality and fun of Motown. Don Kuratko, has moved to Indiana University, and serves on its faculty as director of the Entrepreneurship Program in the Kelley School of Business fulfilling a personal goal to work at a Big Ten University. Don and his wife, Debbie, have two daughters, Christina (21) is in her 3rd year as a Telecommunications major at Ball State University; and Kellie (17) is a junior at Bloomington South HS where she stars in soccer and tennis. summer 2005 |
| Well, as I write, Detroit successfully hosted the 2005 MLB All-star Baseball Game at Comerica Park. National reviews of the host city were all positive and point to an equally successful Super Bowl next February to be held at Ford Field. From our classmates: Steve and Ginny Noon’s son, Aaron, will be another example of multi-generational alumni as he starts classes at John Carroll this fall. Aaron plans on majoring in journalism or foreign languages. ... Val Street was the subject of lengthy interview in New River Free Press International http://careervisions.blogspot.com/. In the interview, Val shares her vision of America from her childhood to her remarkable two decades of public service. John Carroll is featured in the article and the influence the university had on Val’s life. In the meantime, Val kicked off the summer attending her San Francisco neighborhood’s two day jazz festival over the July 4 weekend. Chuck O’Malley, will begin his second year as a part-time instructor teaching business related courses to inmate-students seeking associates degrees in business administration at the federal prison in Bunter, NC. Chuck retired after a 29-year career in the basic materials industry that took him south from Cleveland to Houston, Dallas, Charlotte, and then back north to Philadelphia and Detroit. After having the opportunity to experience life in numerous cities and communities, Chuck decided to enjoy his retirement in Wake Forest, NC. ... I received this newsflash from a reliable source, who covers often overlooked legislation passed at our nation’s capital and who is known for his wit, wisdom, and putting expertise. Dateline, Washington DC: Dan “Sky Pilot” Conrad recently posted a 79 at the Talamore Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC, featuring a hole-in-one on the Par 3, 195 yard second hole. Classmate Lenny Boselovic witnessed the comatose performance. Lenny immediately notified House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who won quick approval of Congressional legislation requiring that a drinking tube be inserted into Conrad in the club house. The measure and subsequent self-medicating swiftly restored the unthinking Conrad to himself, witness his 109 the following day. And how says our congressional leaders don’t respond to needs? Lenny recently returned from a 10 day investigative assignment for Pittsburgh’s Post-Gazette touring U.S. Steel’s European mill in Serbia and Slovakia. Terry Dwyer, called in from the western shores of Michigan, where he and his wife, Gay, and son Michael were enjoying a summer break in Ludington. ... Unconfirmed: due to his new interest in marathon cycling and success in raising money for MS in the recent Houston-Austin bike-a-thon, was that Jim Weitzel cycling through the Alps as captured ESPN’s coverage of this year’s Tour de France? ... Finally, congratulations to our classmate Eddie Kramer being inducted into the Blue Streak Hall of Fame this year. ... Keep the e-mail and phone calls coming. Have a great Fall!

spring 2005 |
| As I compose this column, spring has arrived in Michigan, after a long and cold winter, a new Pope has been elected, a new president for John Carroll has been selected, and I am looking forward to my youngest daughter, Macklin, returning home after her first year at Fordham. ... I had two great phone calls with Joe Tasse and Dan Sansone. Joe, is the president of administration, for St. John’s Hospital in Detroit. He was recently awarded his Fellowship from the American College of Healthcare Executives, the highest honor bestowed on hospital executives. Joe and his wife, Karen, are planning for the graduation of their son, Mike, from U of D, Jesuit in Detroit, who plans to attend Loyola of Chicago this fall. Mike, lettered in soccer and was awarded a scholarship from Loyola for his community service. She represented her school at a recent state high school leadership convention held in Traverse City, MI. Dan Sansone, is president of the Southern and Gulf Coast Division of Vulcan Materials Co, in Birmingham, AL. Dan and his wife, Carol, are looking forward to the graduation of their son, Michael, from Altamont University School this spring. Michael earned his Eagle Scout badge and was the stage director for Altamont’s musical production this past January. Dan praised the volunteer work Carol does to help provide care to battered and abused children in Birmingham. Jim had set a personal goal to raise $500 from friends and family. I’ll report his results in the next issue. ... | Congratulations to Marlana Pugh Hamer who is featured in the recently published Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (2003-2004 edition). Since 1980, she has been an English and reading instructor for the Cleveland Municipal School District. Marlana is currently teaching ninth grade English courses at James Ford Rhodes Education Campus in their School of Leadership. In addition to teaching, she has volunteered to tutor students after school in both reading and math. For the past eight years, Marlana has also involved her students in the district’s annual Young Authors Program. An accomplished speaker and writer, last year, she was one of the winners of the Cuyahoga Valley Poetry Contest. Her winning lyric poem is entitled, “Channeling Thoreau.” She considers her former teachers, Mr. Cotter, Dr. Trace, and Dr. Magner to be some of her literary icons and muses. With no spouse, cats, dogs, or children, Marlana currently resides in Bedford Heights. Some of Marlana’s fondest memories about JCU include: Reading about our streakers on the Quad in the Carroll News, the cultural events sponsored at the university, with appearances by Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee and Dick Gregory; concerts featuring Seals and Crofts and Richie Havens. The event she remembers the most was hearing the late and great poet Gwendolyn Brooks speak. Professor Magner had arranged for her appearance on campus. Marlana still has an autographed copy of one of her books. She recalls studying while waiting for the bus (32?) on Fairmount and Lee, hitchhiking once during inclement weather when the bus was delayed, studying in Grasselli Library on the lower level, she remembers typing (do type writers still exist) paper in the “typing room,” Blue Books and eating mini bagels from the deli while waiting for the bus to go home. Some of our fellow alums and former friends she’d like to hear about are Matthew Dunn, Valerie Street, Annette Haile, Tyrone McBee ’77, Carl Scruggs ’72, Roberta Baranowski, Darlene Watts ’76, Charla Brooks ’75, and Lil Hyvnar. She asked “What ever happened to Mr. Cornelius Brown? He was like a father to so many of the black students there at the time.” If you want to get in touch with her, she is listed in our new alumni directory, or drop me a note and I will include your update in a future Alumni Journal column. ... Van Conway and his wife, Sue, received the Distinguished Volunteer awards from the Association of Fundraising Professionals -- Greater Detroit Chapter at its 13th Annual National Philanthropy Day. Pat Rosen, executive director, said “Sue and Van Conway are dynamic and generous. They are passionate leaders and tireless in their support of the little ones and their families who cross the threshold here at CARE House. Their strength lies in their ability to put the right people together, to network, organize events and raise funds and awareness.” Congratulations to Van and Sue. ... Jim Weitzel and his wife, Sheila, wrote: they have their first teenager, Erin, who turned 13 in August. In addition to doing teenage stuff such as shopping in the mall, listening to CDs and watching OC on TV, she is preparing to take high school entrance exams, traveling to Washington, D.C. in May with her class. She also runs tracks and plays volleyball. She will be awarded the Silver Award in Girl Scouts and is a volunteer with her mom in the local chapter of the National Charity League. Not to be out done, son Drew (or Tex as he was referred to during our 30th Reunion last June), plays basketball, baseball, swims, is a yellow belt in karate, a Webelo cub scout and all A Honor Roll student. Not bad for a 10 year old. Jimbo still has a passion for his MG which is close to being completely refurbished. Jim has been with MCI’s Service Division for over a year now concentrating in the Houston business enterprise market place. Jim and Sheila spent most of 2004 successfully renovating their house. “Money Pit stories galore; if you want the details I am sure they will be happy to share. They are both active in their parish. Sheila started a Bible Study class and Jim is a Lector and Eucharistic minister. Needless the to say they were happy with the Texas win over Michigan at the Rose Bowl. Perhaps you noticed the common theme in this edition of the Class Notes. ... It is great to hear about alumni giving back to their community as volunteers, teachers and parents. I am sure our class is abounding with other such examples of individuals carrying on the Jesuit tradition of “service for others.” Would love to hear about similar activities, personal news and family updates from the rest of you fellow alumn. Don’t be bashful, drop me a note. ... In the meantime, as I sit here at minus 1 degrees in beautiful Detroit, MI, composing this article, I think of spring, baseball (Tigers host the All Star Game this year) warmer weather and anticipate hearing from you. Phone calls, e-mail or U.S. Mail all are welcome. ... Happy 2005! Robby

summer 2004 |
All at our 30th Reunion, held over Father’s Day weekend, had a grand time. More than 40 alumni, spouses and children “returned to campus” for the festivities. The university did a fantastic job at hosting the event. Many thanks go to our reunion coordinator Rosalie Massey for working with the class committee in organizing such a great weekend. And Kate Callahan, our class gift coordinator, reported the Class of ’74 had 104 contributors who pledged over $105,000. Thanks to all of you who helped us exceed our previous numbers. As usual the university sponsored several events through out three days to appeal to alumni/alumnae interests. The most popular, were the History and Fiction in the DaVinci Code, presented by Professor Joe Kelly, the tour of the new press box and Shula Stadium, and “surprise,” the beer tasting seminar hosted by The Great Lakes Brewing Co. Alumni who traveled the greatest distance were Rosemary Amato, who flew in from Amsterdam, while Val Street came from San Francisco. Most of the attendees were from Ohio, but we had Ed and Joanne Staunton drive up from Potomac, MD, Jim and Sheila Weitzel flew in from Houston, Kate O’Neil and her husband Joe Incorvaia, from Connecticut. Bob Boehlert, took a weekend off from getting ready for his daughter’s wedding and made the trek from Syracuse. The Pittsburgh contingent included Martha (Bellassai) and Bob ’73 Feldmeier, and Joe and Lale Virostek. Michigan attendees included Ron Deneweth and Molly (Gibbons ’75) and me. Ed Wood made it in from Illinois, while Bill Wersell came from Toledo. From the greater Cleveland area, attending reunion were: Jean (Rakowsky) and Tony Antonelli, John Arko, Ingrid (Pinter) Arsuaga, Richard and Kathleen Bedell, Mary Blanchard, Joanne (Canitia) and Jim Brady, Bob and Jackie Concepcion, Sean and Karen (Godfrey) Cooper, Larry and Sandy Dulay, Phylis Ferrara, Ron and Sheila Grobelny, Fred and Suzanne ’73 Koneval, Gary and Mary Lynn (Crowley) Laughlin, Tom and Karen Lodge, Bob and Mary (Richards) Madden, Thomas McCrystal, Larry and Marie Meathe, Arlene Mole, Ann and Joe ’73 Monroe, Jack Moran, Hugh and Suzanne Morgan, Sally and Steve Pap, Cathy Reinhard, Kathy and Kevin Smith, Nora (Kovacs) and John Torontali, Christine Ulrich Gibbons, Joe and Joan ’75 Ursic. ... Check out pictures from the weekend at the John Carroll Web site. It was great to catch up with so many of our fellow alumni. There are weddings in planning, children following in their parent’s footsteps attending JCU, kids have grown up and have started their own careers and families. Some members of the Class of ’74 are grandparents as well! Stories and recollections from our years at John Carroll filled the conversations during the weekend. Some were embellished, some were clarified, and some were denied. But all brought back fond memories filling the days and nights with laughter and warm feelings. Regretfully, the time flew by so fast, and I did not get a chance to chat with all who were there. If I did not include your name in this article, please accept my apology, it was not intentional. It is never too early to plan for the 35th in 2009. In the meantime, e-mails and phone calls are always welcome. Send me a note; the Journal is a great way to keep in touch with the rest of our class and the JCU family. Hope you had a wonderful summer! Robby

The big news of course, is our 30th Reunion is just around the corner. Plans are underway to make this a fun filled and successful reunion. Members of the reunion committee have had two conference calls to discuss events and ideas. Any one wishing to be a member of the planning committee is welcome. Please contact Rosalie Massey at 216 397 3014 or at rmassey@jcu.com. Currently the committee consists of: Van Conway, Hugh Morgan, Phil Niedzielski-Eichner, Kate O'Neil, Joe Ursic and myself. In addition to the committee members, I have heard from the following alumni/ae planning to attend: Kevin and Kathy Smith, Jim Weitzel, Nancy Zimmer Hiltibrand and Ed Staunton. The reunion is June 18-20. Be on the look out for invitations and e-mails inviting you to participate. Now news from some of our fellow alumnae. Nancy Zimmer Hiltibrand has made a career change. After 28 years as director of Social Services in a long term care facility and retirement community, Nancy is teaching deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers. She developed her sign language skills at her church over the past four years and suddenly had a chance to use those skills in a job. Elementary education had been her intended career path while attending JCU. It just took 30 years for her to get in the classroom. But as much as she enjoyed the school experience, her passion is working with senior citizens. So Nancy has taken the job as a resident service coordinator for an independent senior living apartment complex. She is responsible for connecting the residents with whatever services in the community will help them maintain their independence. It has been a real joy being back working with senior adults. On the home front, her husband, Kim, is a branch manager with US Bank. Their oldest daughter, Kelly, is coordinator of special education services for an inner city school in Cincinnati, OH, and their son, Scott, just graduated from high school and will join his sister, Amy, at Northern Kentucky University. ... Kevin and Kathy Smith have moved to Bainbridge, OH after living more than 25 years in Chicagoland. Their oldest daughter Kelly and her husband, Lt. Cmd. Christian Dunbar U.S.N. had their first child in 2003, Abigail Naniloa in Honolulu. Naniloa is Hawaiian for "most beautiful." Kelly is the community relations officer of the Hawaiian Naval District. Their son Kevin and his wife Christy are living in LA. Kevin is with Mellon Bank as a commercial loan officer and his wife, Christy, is in the movie industry. ... Daughter Kristen recently moved to San Diego. Finally, daughter Kara is using her master’s degree in Sports Marketing & Athletic Administration with the Chicago Bears. Kathy is working at Hillcrest Hospital in Critical Care and Kevin remains in the steel broker business. ... Vipin Desai reports from Silver Springs, MD where he and his family have been living to the last 25 years. Vipin is the CEO of MVS a family owned company, established in 1997. MVS provides information technology services to city, state and federal government agencies, including IT consulting services, hardware, software and professional staffing services. Vipin has lots of fond memories of John Carroll the great campus, helpful and understanding classmates and professors. He appreciated their support and assistance very much as he was new to the country and had difficulty adjusting to new culture. Vipin is an American citizen now. He enjoys travel, has become a big time Redskins fan, and performs charity work in urban neighborhoods and in India to improve literacy. Unfortunately, Vipin will not be able to make the reunion. He will be traveling abroad in June. However, he would like to hear from any of his 1974 classmates from the mathematics department. Vipin can be reached at vdesai@mvsconsulting.com. ... Remember; make your plans now to attend our 30th Reunion in June. See you then! Robby
