| fall 2008 | Greetings to all. Hope everyone has had a great summer in their travels or connecting with friends and family. Received a note from Kevin Whalen who celebrated his 50th birthday with a surprise party that his spouse, Suzanne McChesney Whalen ’82, planned. It was a Jimmy Buffett themed party called “A pirate looks at 50.” Attending the all-night bash were the following: Sean Whalen ’86, Shannon McChesney Fanshawe ’88, Beth McChesney Wright ’80 and Tom Cua ’80. | summer 2008 | Summer greetings to all. Reunion weekend will be hitting the campus June 20-22 and vacation season is in full swing. The Holtz family will be trekking out to Myrtle Beach at the end of July in the new Saturn Outlook. Great vehicle. Gas mileage is not much better than the 10 year old Venture that it replaced. Go figure. I would have thought that Detroit would have tried to improve the fuel economy without sacrificing safety and quality after 10 model years. I will do a Keith Olbermann if I see any GM execs complaining about market share. ... Summer time is also the opportunity for friends and family to gather for picnics or maybe catch a son or daughter participating in America’s grand old game, namely baseball. ... Good luck to Ron Zajaczkowski’s Westlake baseball team in which his son is a player. | spring 2008 | Hey folks ... guess what?? John Carroll’s gymnasium in the DeCarlo Varsity Center celebrated its 50th anniversary since being dedicated on December 4, 1957. The JCU basketball team opened up against the Xavier Musketeers, a team that would eventually win the National Invitational Tournament that year. The number 50 is significant to me and for probably many of you this year or in the near future because this is birthday year 50 for many of you ... 50 is just a number, but it is a milestone in any event. My wife, Mary Knurek Holtz ’89, coordinated a surprise party disguised as a holiday bash. Many friends attended including some distinguished JCU alumni; namely Steve ’90 and Mary ’91 Tirpak, Alan and Theresa ’89 Weinberg, Debbie ’81 and Greg Branic plus coming in all the way from Cary, N.C., were Staci and Kevin Tighe. I need to venture up to the Cary area some day to check out the golf courses and see how “Arnie” Tighe is playing. Rumor has it he may need some serious game improvement irons. Greg and Kevin send their greetings to all knowing full well that whatever they say could make it in print. Numerous gifts were left like a cane, bottle of whiskey, grapefruits, long hair gray hippie wig, numerous bottles of wine, etc. ... The recent holiday parties also let me cross paths with Bruce Lockhart at Theresa '89 Weinberg’s gathering. I usually see Bruce on an annual basis and he was looking as strong as ever getting ready for a great 2008. ... Those of you active in alumni events will note that Pete Bernardo ’67 has been elected to University Heights City Council. That may be historical in nature since I am unaware of anyone affiliated with the university serving in University Heights City government. ... The university also unveiled a new logo featuring a Bottony Cross thus connecting to its strong Jesuit Catholic identity. The January 2008 issue of e-News features Dr. Peggy O’Hearn Finucane in the Spotlight column. Peggy has worked at JCU since 1998 as an associate professor in Communications and Theatre Arts and recently as the interim director of the Center for Service and Social Action. ... Gary Szelagowski dropped me another line recently and is still working hard for the shareholders at National City Bank. ... For those of you that may be in the local area, Reunion Weekend will be held June 20-22 at JCU. They happened to hear the president give the commencement speech which Gary mentioned was very impressive to witness. I believe Saint Vincent is where the Steelers have training camp and Latrobe is famous for its Rolling Rock beer. ... | spring 2007 | Hello from the North Coast ... it is summer vacation time. My gang, Adam, Patrick, Rosemary and spouse Mary are planning a get away to Myrtle Beach. We have never been there so it should be fun and the pictures look nice. I laugh to myself knowing that pictures can make Edgewater Beach on Lake Erie a hot vacation spot also. | winter 2007 | Since the last column the winter blues are over and Spring is here. Time to shine the clubs and get ready for Indians baseball. The holiday season was pleasant in Rocky River, Oh, -- I can really say that I did not miss the snow that much. I am not a skier so who cares. I will say that as I am composing this column we are looking at potentially 6-12 inches of incoming snow. Santa was good to the Holtz family as he dropped off the Nintendo Wii game. This is my first foray into gaming so right now I am clueless as to what to do. Rest assured that this is the kids’ present not mine, although the Tony Hawk game is pretty cool. John Ettorre was in receipt of a photo from Tom Cua of the OSU marching band spelling out a variation of script Ohio which was a precursor to a disaster on January 8 against the University of Florida. At least for Kevin Tighe’s sake Michigan was smashed by Southern Cal. John also passed on a few other tidbits ... He visited Jeanne Ann Wall Cannon on a recent Chicago visit. He hung out on Jeanne Ann’s front porch like some rogue reporter till the Wall family returned from a family bike ride. Greetings. I recently returned from a vacation with the family up in Canada. We visited the falls and also spent some time at Great Wolf Lodge. I will offer a few more tidbits since many of you comment that I rarely tell you what I am doing ... well when I look at the calendar I see that I have been employed with Medical Mutual of Ohio for over 20 years. I never imagined staying at a company for that long when I think back the times that I would scan the bulletin board by Fr. Duffy’s co-op office. I sometimes think what if ... I imagine we all wonder if I would have done this or that where would I be today. I have three wonderful children -- twin boys, first graders, Adam and Patrick who are finishing up their soccer season on the Avalanche team and a daughter, Rosemary, entering the fourth grade that will be playing basketball this fall. My wife, Mary ’89, is a stay at home mom, drives a van and qualifies as a soccer mom since she coaches the boys' soccer team. She will also be an assistant coach on Rosemary’s basketball team. One of her duties is handling of the discipline duties. Daughter, Nora, will be a junior. Kate also coaches track. I would think the track team is in great shape since back in our JCU days I never could keep up with Kate when we went running along the grass median on Belvoir. Kate also enjoys gardening and playing ultimate Frisbee. She and her spouse, Paul Sheridan, have been participating in school housing rehab service projects during their summers. I understand that Kate could give Bob Vila a lesson or two on how to use a hammer or power tools. I could have used Kate’s assistance when installing an in ground basketball hoop. It took me, three neighbors and two ladders to get the job done. This was not an America’s Funniest Home Video moment; just the hoop was much heavier than it looked ... go figure. ... I received an inspiring note from cancer survivor, Aileen Helbling Magnotto. She attended the 25th Reunion and enjoyed seeing many of her friends. She learned to deal with her cancer and conquer it. She now speaks about nutrition and her overall experience. Her main message is be diligent in health care and cancer, if caught early, is curable. Aileen also informed me that congratulations are in order to Shirley Novak in Pittsburgh on receiving the St. Thomas Moore Award. This is a very prestigious award given to attorneys. Based on early exit polling and call reports, here is a sampling of who you might see the weekend of June 17-19th: Rick Chelko, Paul Goodworth, Michael Gordon, Scott Heran, Bryan Kennedy, Sean Meaney, Ron Zajaczkowski, Dave Daigler, John Ettorre, Margaret O’Hearn Finucane, Tom Finucane, Matt Holtz, Don McGuire, Rosanne Scanlan, Patrice McCauley Hulseman and Maureen McCarthy ... don’t be left out! Dear quarter-century classmates ... that’s right, next summer will be our 25th reunion. Please mark the dates -- June 17-19, 2005 -- on your calendar and plan to be with us. Those of you wishing to be on the reunion committee contact Rosalie Massey at 216-397-3014 or if e-mail works better try Matt Holtz at www.mfh2885@wmconnect.com or John Ettorre at jettorre@voyager.net. And for those of you guys who rarely or never got invited to Murphy Hall, here’s one more inducement to come back: our class will be headquartered there Reunion Weekend. It’s your chance to make up for lost visits ... In preparation for reunion, we’ve been taking a hard look at the current ’80 class list. The vast majority of our classmates, it would seem, now live in either Ohio or Illinois, with a not insignificant number (15) in Florida. There’s a sprinkling of more exotic locales, too. Dave Kusner lives in Iowa City, Carol Raleigh in San Jose, CA; and Bonnie Repar Farley in Littleton, CO. And of course some classmates returned to their signature hometowns: where would Steeltown be without its homegrown Perry Mason, Shirley Novak, or Louisville, KY without the lovely Beth Hammer? There’d be no Mo Motown without Cheryl Kosak Wilson, and Beantown just wouldn’t be the same without Ann Mannion. Finally, everybody’s favorite Ragin’ Cajun, Rob Lombardi, still lives in Louisiana. Here are a couple of fervent wishes: that the ebullient Katie FitzGerald will take a quick timeout from her life in West Virginia next summer to come back to see us at reunion, and that Californian songbird Rita Dollard-O’Malley will do likewise. ... For those of us who have stayed in Cleveland, there have been several classmate sightings recently. Dr. Peggy O’Hearn Finucane, who follows in the illustrious footsteps of her dad, the former dean of Arts & Sciences, now teaches communications at John Carroll. Not long after earning her doctorate, she added a faculty award to her wall. Congratulations, Peg. ... Meanwhile, we were listening to a recent public radio fund raising marathon and heard mention of Chelko Consulting, founded by former JCU footballer Rick Chelko. His former teammate, offensive lineman Pat Divito was also spotted at Homecoming ’03, and his name remains up on the wall at JCU, in recognition of his generous support of the sparkling rehab of the gym complex. ... As summer wound down, we happened to breeze past Cleveland’s largest building, Key Tower, only to find Masina Frate catching a few lunchtime rays. A gifted graphic designer, she’s now working for the bank. ... Elsewhere, it seems classmate Mike Bacon has been making a name for himself. With his partner, wife Debbie, his Classic Teleproductions has quietly racked up more than 70 Emmy awards for TV excellence. The November issue of Northern Ohio Live covers his upcoming documentary on Cleveland Browns legendary running back Jim Brown. The article was written by yet another classmate: John Ettorre. Finally, the tale of the double Marios: We attended a funeral recently, for the mother of JCU graduate Frank Piunno ’70. While in line, we noticed some gleaming choppers belonging to Mario Alemagno (he’s a dentist). And it all took place in a funeral home owned and operated by America’s cheeriest funeral director, Mario Fioritto, who made an appearance as well. ... I also had the chance to catch up with Greg Branic once I found him for round of golf at the beautiful Royal Crest golf club outside of Strongsville, OH. Greg is going strong at Southwest General Hospital keeping their budgets and finances on track. That’s all for now. A special “Hardy Boys” thanks goes out to John Ettorre for his research, design and contributions to this column. Have a great holiday season, everyone, and see you next summer. Matt
