spring 2008 Happy 2008! For many of us, this year will be a big one ... the year we hit the big 4-0! How did that happen? Doesn’t it just seem like yesterday that we were fighting our way through the crowd at the Colony? Would love to hear how you plan to celebrate turning 40 (which I hear is the new 30)! ... I ran into Sam Barther last spring (a bit late, but I uncovered the notes I jotted down stuffed into a pocket of my purse) at St. Barnabas church in Sagamore Hills. It turns out we both had friends who’s child was making their First Communion. Sam is a dentist in Olmstead Falls. ... Stefanie (Ulatowski) Rhine was successful in her latest run for the South Euclid-Lyndhurst School Board. She was appointed to the board in November to fill an outgoing member’s spot. Her elected term began in January. Congratulations, Stefanie! I know that this has been something you’ve work hard for and your perseverance paid off! ... I haven’t heard from these classmates and would love to hear from them and all of you too -- Pete Smayda, Mary Kay Farrell, Marty Walter, Daniela Lungociu, and Tim Foley. Take a minute to e-mail me with your news – it would be fun to get something other than spam in my in box! ... Cheers, Melissa

fall 2007

“Winter is on my head, but eternal spring is in my heart”…so goes the quote from French author Victor Hugo. ... As we settle in for another winter season, I hope you enjoy the following news and notes from your fellow classmates. I got a great e-mail from Michelle Couture Koester. She just returned from a fabulous five-day get-away at the Outer Banks. Beth Cornelius Nairn was generous enough to share her family’s vacation home for a JCU girls’ weekend. Debbie Yencer Arcara, Sue Hersh Greenberg, Lynne Rifugiato Young, Susan Ayna Carney, Kristin Fornes Connaughton, Kristin Dickinson Hogue, Maribeth Brunn Robinson, Amy Finke Cook, Linda Holmes Donnelly and Beth spent the days relaxing on the beach, listening to their favorite ’80s songs, and catching up. With 31 children between them all, it was a vacation well earned. ... Tom ’91 and Jeannine (Muresan) Mylott are living in Aurora with their four boys: Patrick (11), Joseph (11), Daniel (8), and Michael (4). Tom is the national sales manager for Bostik -- he has been there for 11 years. Tom was able to catch up with Brian Cochran at the Homecoming game. Brian has come back home to be the football defensive coordinator -- welcome back, Brian. Tom and Brian’s football history goes way back ... they played together at St. Gabriel’s, Lake Catholic and were members of the 1989 JCU championship team. Tom noted how far the program has come since his freshman playing days. He didn’t get a helmet until midway though double sessions. He still has a scar over his eye from a hit he took from Brian! Guess which one had the helmet? ... Jeannine gave me some great updates on several classmates. Jill (Varley) Conduff is a senior sales manager at Lighting Dynamics. Their offices are at the University Hospitals Twinsburg Medical Center. They have three girls: Morgan, Madison and Brin. Erin received her medical degree from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency at Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, FL. ... summer 2007

Welcome to autumn ... is everyone ready for back to school and football season? I want to take a moment to brag about someone very important to me ... my hubby, Chris Wenzler. Last May, Chris went to Jamaica on an immersion trip with JCU Campus Ministry. He accompanied about a dozen JCU students to Kingston, Jamaica, for 10 days. While there, the group worked in a children’s hospital, Riverton School, and the Mother Teresa Home (hospice of the sick and elderly). Chris spent much of his time at Riverton – a public elementary school built near the city dump. Public school in Jamaica is not like public school in the U.S. – parents have to pay to send their children to school. This means that parents have to decide which child goes to school which day of the week! As we head into the season of Thanksgiving, I hope we can all take a moment to remember how fortunate we are for the wonderful opportunities we have – don’t let them go to waste. ... I got a quick e-mail from Jean Hetzer Harsar. She and husband, Al, welcomed their new daughter, Meghan Marie, on March 28. Meghan joins big brothers, Matthew (8) and Michael John (4). Congratulations, Jean and Al! ... Lisa Grisez-Shullick is living in Lorain, OH, with her husband, Dan, and their two children, Michael (11) and Tricia (9). Lisa has spent the past five years working part time at St. Peter School, where their children attend. Most recently, Lisa began a new part time job with the Catholic Action Commission of Lorain. She also is using her 10 years of human resource experience to serve as an independent trainer in leadership, supervision and time management – check out www.gsmmotivations.com! Lisa recently ventured to Chicago with Sue Zurkovski Swain for a gathering with Holly Monahan, Chris Jamison, Shannon Place Martin, Becky Lacovic Barnhart, Liz Brent Franz and Karen Teeter Rufer ’89! The gathering was in celebration of their “39th” birthdays – sounds like a blast -- would love to hear how everyone is doing! ... Rob Taskey took advantage of the new JCU Connect message board -- Rob and his wife, Cheryl, recently moved from Kalamazoo to Pittsburgh. They have two children, Austin and Olivia. Rob is a senior investment officer at National City in the Private Client Group. He manages a group of eight portfolio managers. Since being back in Pittsburgh, he had lunch with Eric Rosenberg! ... In July I ran into Sally Ingberg-Lee, her husband, Dan, and their two girls, Nicole and Erin at Yours Truly in Hudson. They are living in Twinsburg and Sally is working at Forest City Enterprises. It was a gorgeous summer day and it was fun catching up with Sally and Dan – the girls are adorable! ... If you haven’t already done so, check out the newest way to keep in touch with fellow alumni ... JCU Connect - http://www.jcu.edu/alumni/jcuconnect.htm! The site offers an alumni directory, class news and notes, message boards, photo albums! Check it out and update your record if you haven’t in a while. ... Don’t forget to pass along any updates ... looking forward to hearing from you. Melissa

Hello class of 1990! The spirit of doing “good for others” was alive and well on the JCU campus this past April 21-22! That weekend was the First Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The Relay is an eighteen hour walk to raise money for advocacy, research and services related to cancer. It celebrates the survivors and memorializes those lost by this disease. I took part in the Relay on Chris’ team – JCU Sports Information -- with the students that work in his office. I never felt more proud to be alumni of JCU as I watched the students who organized the event, walked with the hundreds of students who walked for life, and celebrated raising over $76,000.00 toward a cure! Life in L.A. continues to be an adventure for BobKasunic! He decided to use these adventures to create, write and produce a short film! The film made the rounds of some film festivals in the fall, but you can view on YouTube -- check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3Efnc828AM. In addition to the short film, Bob has been writing for a few magazines, still does consulting work with his freelance marketing and strategy company he started a few years ago. fall 2006 I love this time of year – the sky is so blue, the leaves are like colors found in a box of Crayola crayons, and the air is crisp and smell of apples! With fall comes all of that plus football season (got to love Fantasy Football -- how are you doing in your league?) and Homecomings! fall 2005
Autumn greetings to you all, it is hard to believe that the holiday season is fast approaching. I had the honor of being a guest at the inauguration of Father Niehoff, JCU’s 24th president, in October. As I listened to his speech, I was reminded of how important it is that we take the values learned at JCU and use them to better the community around us. The awesome accomplishments of our alumni never cease to amaze me and inspire me. This is a perfect segue into the news of our classmates and what they are doing ... Stefanie (Ulatowski) Rhine is getting involved in the political process and is running for a seat on the South Euclid-Lyndhurst school board. She and her husband, Dan, live in Lyndhurst with their three children. Good luck, Stefanie, you got my vote! ... Lisa (Miaskowski) Arnold updated me with some of her own good news ... she and hubby, Matt, are expecting triplets any day now (I am writing this in October, so by the time it reaches you, the babies will have arrived). They are living in Lakewood and Lisa has left her job as a high school guidance counselor to focus on being a mom. Lisa mentioned that they won’t know the sexes of the babies until they are born. I think that is cool particularly since it seems everybody wants to know ahead time. Lisa wrote that she sees Leslie (Nagley) McCarthy and Vicki (Frabotta) Cowman each month for brunch. Leslie just had her third child in April. Megan joins big brother, Evan (5) and sister, Kelly (3). Leslie is doing her student teaching this semester and will be licensed in December to teach special education. Congratulations, Leslie.
