| fall 2008 | Hello everyone! It is always nice to attend Reunion Weekend even if it isn’t your year as you just never know who you might bump into. This year I had the pleasure of bumping into Ron Becker, Steve Fink and Mark Henderson. The group recalled their trip to Washington, DC, with Dr. Larry Schwab and Dr. Marianne Salcetti. Ron walked right past vice president Dan Quayle’s office and decided to stop in and say I’m here to see Dan. The vice president’s assistant went on to say “He’s not here” ...Ron insisted “but his office lights are on and I even see his legs at the desk” ... Where as the assistant replied He’s out of town and you need to go.” We all had a good laugh remembering that story! ... I wanted to let all of you know that I started a new job on May 21. I am working for Cleveland.com as a print and online supervisor. My role is to work with the print advertising account executives at the Plain Dealer and Sun News. Basically they present print and I’ll present online advertising to help new and existing clients grow their business. As the saying goes it’s a small world after all because the person from the Plain Dealer that works with Monster Mini Golf set up a meeting with me and the owners Lori and Edmund Gai. It sounds like their business is doing well and I look forward to meeting with them later this month. ... I was very sad to learn of the passing of Jim Parker’s father Gerald Parker: Gerald E. Parker PhD, SHRP professor emeritus at St. Louis University passed away July 16, 2008. Gerry was a proponent of education, a JCU fan, and a great man. Please keep Jim and his family in your prayers during this difficult time. ... I really want to hear from you! Please call or send an e-mail to update me about you or anyone else you still keep in touch with from our class. Jim | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| summer 2008 | Hello everybody! Spring is in the air on campus. ... Steven DeLuca is in the process of selling his insurance agency and moving to the Denver, CO, area. Steven is sick of the Midwestern weather and loves to ski and is currently training for “Grandma’s Marathon” in Duluth, MN, June 16. This will be his third marathon. “I’m trying to catch up with Ted Rieple and Brent Desiderio. Last time I talked to them they had run four or five.” Steven’s family is well; his sons are playing flag football. Steven wanted to send hello’s to his old roommates, Ted Rieple, Brent Desiderio, Joe (Buck) Ferencak, Timmy Pearl and Lou Cozza ’93. Thanks for the update Steven! ... We always knew that Sharon Neura was a class act. Now she has a store to prove it! Trading in her corporate vice president title for a stint, all her own, Class Act Resale Shoppe opened its doors for business on March 13 located in the heart of Little Italy. Sharon embarked on this creative entrepreneurship adventure because of her love for old, new and everything in-between. Class Act hosts a variety of new and gently used designer labeled clothing for women, unique and trendy leather handbags and fashion for both ladies and men. Actually the store has so much to offer that it wouldn’t fit in my column. However, you can see it all - www.classactresale.com - or by calling Sharon at 216.707.9000. ... See you on campus, Jim | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| spring 2008 | Happy New Year! I hope that you had a great holiday season and that 2008 is off to a great start. Over the holidays I received a note from Anne (Pollard) Gill. Anne and her husband, Sean, have three boys: Brendan (3), Gannon (1), and Casey (4 mos.). The happy couple lives in San Marino, Calif. Anne is a stay-at-home and loves every minute of it. Sean has his own executive search firm in Los Angeles and employs executives, CPAs, and CFOs, for companies such as Disney, Sony and Warner Bros. The family loves California, however, they visit Michigan twice a year to see family and friends. Anne still keeps in touch with Kathleen Tobin McDonald and Mike Cronin. Speaking of Mike Cronin, Mike and I recently had lunch at Yours Truly in Independence, Ohio. We plan to get together every quarter, if you’re interested in joining us for lunch just drop me a line and I’ll let you know where to meet. ... Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman announced that he is running for Dennis Kucinich’s 10th Congressional seat, which includes the West Side of Cleveland and the city’s Western suburbs. Cimperman said Kucinich’s second bid for the White House triggered his decision to run against the one-time ally. “The community needs a full-time congressman,” said Cimperman, who lives just outside the district. Good luck Joe! ... I was excited to hear that Cathy (Herman) Powers is a member of the National Alumni Board. She became a member of the board in June and will help to re-energize the City Clubs. Alumni should look for active City Clubs in Cleveland; Pittsburgh; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; and Los Angles. If you are interested in a City Club in your area, contact Cathy - superpowers5@verizon.net. Cathy said “I’m really honored to be working so closing with the university to rejuvenate such a wonderful way for alumni to keep their connection with Carroll.” Cathy went on to tell me that Kathie (Petrarca) Wilson, husband John ’93, and daughter Rebecca (4) celebrated the birth of Ryan James Wilson on July 23, 2007. ... It’s nice to hear that our classmates still have a sense of adventure. In August, Cindy Ford and her mom just got in the car and took two weeks exploring the West. With no planned agenda and just a road map, they landed in, and hiked through the Badlands, the Black Hills, Yellowstone National Park, and the Shoshone National Forest. In November, Cindy returned from a three-week trip to Tanzania, Africa. Cindy and three of her friends, climbed and reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (a lung aching 19,341 ft.). “It was amazing, awe inspiring and the most physically and mentally challenging thing I’ve ever done.” The group then headed across the Serengeti and Ngorogoron Crater where they had close encounters with lions, rhinos, cheetahs and leopards. They also brought along donations to a local school where many of the children are orphans – having lost their parents either to AIDS or Malaria. Thanks for this exciting update Cindy! ... The holidays are a great time to catch up -- on Thursday, December 27, Dave Garton and his wife, Ann, were in Cleveland. I met them along with Steve Fink and Chris Powers at Flannery’s Pub. We all had a nice time and it was great catching up with old friends and reliving some of our days at John Carroll. Thanks to Dave and Ann for an enjoyable evening. See you on campus, Jim | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| fall 2007 | Hello everybody! What a great turn out we had for our 15th Reunion! The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed the fun-filled weekend. For Adrienne, it was hopes to take graduate courses at Columbia University as a non-degree student. While taking courses, she worked part-time at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum to make some meager wages. Additionally, she volunteered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art assisting a curator she had met at a conference. After working on the exhibition and networking within the museum, Adrienne was recruited for a managerial position in education accepting the position as manager School Tours and Reservations for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Being in New York in a great place like Manhattan, you can imagine she receives a few JCU visitors like Sarah (Stehle) Stamp who visits twice a year and Amy Hollo joined Sarah last year. Dee Hanley Bauer and Greg ’93 also visited last year. Sarah, Dee and Jenn (Hierbaum) Pastore are all coming this fall for a JCU girls outing. | spring 2007 | Hello everyone. My next column will feature all the highlights from our 15th Reunion. However, I wanted to include some recent news in this column. ... Molly (McTigue) McNally dropped me a note to share some positive changes that have been going on in her life over the past year or so. She and her husband, Tom, decided last spring that it was time to leave their condo in the city for the greener pastures of the suburbs. So the couple bought a house in Glen Ellyn (Western ‘burbs of Chicago) last spring and learned soon after the move that twins were in their future! They moved last July, and spent the summer getting settled and acclimated with their two boys, Jack (4 ½) and Michael (2). Molly said “It’s a total change from city living but so much better!!” Coinciding with the move, Molly quit her job in pharmaceutical advertising to be a stay at home mom. While she misses the work (at times), she doesn’t miss the stress that goes with being a working mom! On November 25, 2006 the JCU stork delivered twin sisters Meghan and Riley to join the happy family. Thanks for the update Molly! ... Here is an update about Sean Kearns. Sean has three children: Jackie (4), Liam (3) and Brendan (1). He left the telecommunications industry a couple of years ago and is in the software industry working for Oracle. Tim is still in The Bel-Airs, a ’50s band where he plays bass and sings backup vocals, plus he has been playing in various pit orchestras including playing for The Cleveland Cabaret Project downtown. ... Remember the song 867-5309? Well there is a new number that will be more famous than that one! Well at least to the JCU 1992 community. It is 206.202.1992. When you call this number you can leave a voice message for all of your JCU 1992 alumni and Anton Zuiker will post your voice message as a podcast on http://jcu92.net/loudblog/ Very Kool! Special thanks to Anton for his dedication to http://www.jcu92.net and the addition of voice messaging to the site! ... Speaking of http://www.jcu92.net/ Here were some recent posts: “Jennifer Ritter (Gonzalez) -- June 28, 2005 at 10:06 Karen, Michelene, Bridget, Megan, I’m glad I finally ventured onto the Web site, lots of good news, lots of babies. My one baby (and two step daughters) may be all I can commit to. Lots of work. But, I’m in Chicago, working running a nonprofit on the north side, trying to not miss every new thing my baby does. I ran into Gina Krusinski at an art auction. She was pregnant with twins and also a step mommy, and lives here as well. I also have had a bit of contact with Angela Cardamone, my old roommate, who is married and has a cute little boy and lives in western PA. We need to all have a play date! And just a final thought – it’s good John Carroll produced some republicans who don’t want to learn a second language – wow, that was brutal. I’ll restrain myself. I hope everyone is happy and healthy – Jen” ... “Remembered or not” Hi Marcellus Nealy here. I am not sure if anyone reading this will remember me or not. Anton I remember you. 13 years have sure passed by in a blink. Right after school I moved to Tokyo, Japan. I am still in Tokyo living up to some foolish comment I made 13 years ago. The comment was “when I become the master of the place then I will leave.” My Japanese is rusty but good enough to survive and have a bar conversation. I remember when those Japanese exchange students came to Carroll and we made fun of them because they mispronounced words and said things like shit instead of sit and lice instead of rice. The joke’s on me now. I have become the mispronouncing, bad grammar, heavy accented foreigner we have all run across at one point in our lives. I’m married and have two mostly angelic children. My wife is Naomi, my son Devon (8) and daughter Desire (5). For work I have been freelancing various odd jobs for the past two years; traveling around the country and the world spouting mad bits of my own poetry with musicians; producing musical events; promoting artists; DJing at a radio station, renting out my sound equipment to promoters; doing market research for a U.S. based client; copywriting, proofreading, and narration. It’s amazing how creative survival can make you. Thanks to my undying addiction to paying the rent on time I have acquired a wide range of barely lucrative skills. When I first came to Japan I spent four years selling English language books and teaching English. I spent the next six working for a pop music management company. All in all it has been a crazy 13 years for better or for worse. I am a million miles from wealthy and two stops away from no regrets. Anyway, I was feeling a bit nostalgic (natsukashii in Japanese) and wondering what some of the people I might have known at JCU were doing, how they had aged, if I was the only one who lost some hair and gained more pounds than I wanted around the mid section ... that sort of thing. I surfed the net and ran across this blog and decided to leave a note. David Maher, my JCU roommate, is also here in Tokyo. He worked at the same book company I worked at then moved on to a company called Maruhon where he edits consumer and maintenance manuals for Nissan and various other automobile manufacturers. He’s not married yet but I suspect he and his girlfriend might some time soon.” We remember you Marcellus! Thank for your posts! See you at Homecoming! Jim
