I received a note from Rachel (Luchini) Sielski. She writes: “I am married to my high school sweetheart, Ted Sielski, and living in Bay Village, Ohio. We recently adopted a five-year-old boy who is the absolute light of our lives. I am the executive director of a non-profit agency in Bay Village called Family Haven which provides support to adults with developmental disabilities both at home and in the community. I would love to hear from anyone in the Cleveland area who is interested in becoming involved in fundraising or volunteering. It’s a wonderfully fulfilling way to spend time. Contact me - rsielski@familyhaven.org - if you are interested. ... fall 2004
I hope everyone had a great summer, but unless you’ve escaped Cleveland for a warmer climate, you’re probably in the middle of a cold winter right about now. There hasn’t been a whole lot of news coming in lately, so if you want to give me and everyone else in the Class of 1997 a heads-up on what’s happening with you, shoot me an e-mail at sparkyb29@hotmail.com. ... Gary Love dropped me a line to let me know he has returned to Fort Bragg, NC from an assignment to South Korea in March of 03 and was deployed with the 82nd Airborne to Operation Iraqi Freedom that August. He spent 8 months in theatre with the 1-505th PIR (Parachute Infantry Regiment) where they were directly responsible for the volatile city of Fallujah. A couple months after they returned, he left the 82nd and is now taking a company command in the 525th Military Intelligence Brigade. Unfortunately they are slated to deploy to Iraq just after the new year. “A year in Korea, 6 months back (1 with Amy ’96 & kids), 8 months in Iraq, 9 months back, and upcoming 12 months in Iraq. Quite a pace, huh!?” Gary’s wife Amy ’96 and daughter, Jessica, and son, Mark, will remain in Fayetteville, NC, while he spends roughly 12 months in Iraq. Amy and 3 other military spouses have started a small business doing interior design. ... Lauren (O’Neil) Rakvic, a fellow floor mate on 3rd floor Sutowski our freshman year, also sent me a letter. “Since graduating, I taught in Euclid for 5 years and got my master’s at John Carroll. From our graduating class, Denise Haynik and Alison (Chill) Dietsch were two of my bridesmaids. (They both say hi, by the way!). ... John Shea recently spent time down in Peru as part of his Jesuit studies. Here is just a sampling of his always-fascinating experiences: Besides running high schools and colleges, Peruvian Jesuits help organize the Fey Alegria (faith and happiness) grade schools. They cooperate with the government who fund the schools and with lay and religious (usually nuns) who staff the schools. They are also involved in parish work – especially in the pueblo jovens (young villages) that surround the major cities of Peru. Escaping poverty and violence (Peru experienced two decades of civil unrest because of the terrorist activities of Shining Path), millions of people moved from the country to the cities. Many of the young villages they formed lack electricity, water or paved roads. To see such poverty and realize that most of the world lives like that was a powerful experience for all of us. The people are uneducated and many speak Quechua, the native language. By establishing community leaders (most often women) in each parish, the Jesuits have empowered the people to assert their rights for basic needs such as water, food and education. Getting to know the Jesuits in Peru helped me appreciate the international character of the Society – this was especially true when some of us received a “behind-the-scenes” tour of a Jesuit church.” ... Andrea Tracy is the program director at the Lake/Geauga County Educational Assistance Agency -- her two cats have learned to meow the “Star Spangled Banner.” Nothing new on her plans for taking over the world, so she’s safe to talk to for now. ...
