They were there to dedicate
a new memorial scholarship, but the family members, colleagues and
classmates of Steve Burchyns '72, who succumbed to cancer in July
2002, were primarily celebrating a life when they gathered at John
Carroll last Saturday (Oct 18).
Ray Burchyns '68 confessed he had been struggling with how best to
bring closure to his brother's story. "When Kate Calahan (of JCU's
development office) suggested that instead of a 'period' Steve's story
needed an 'exclamation point,' I knew she was right."
The "exclamation point" became a $400,000 commitment to endow scholarships
targeted to the children of special agents from the Diplomatic Security
Service, where Steve had distinguished himself throughout 28-year
career. |
