“Trayless Tuedays”
“Consumption, Reduction, and Concern” - This event will help JCU become more conscious of how much food we consume and how much food we waste. Everyone will only be able to take as much as they can carry, and if they want more food they will have to make an extra trip. Also waste will have to be emptied in garbage bags that will be within view for all students to see. One primary goal is to reduce waste and to help spread awareness about food consumption and hunger. Click here to learn how “Trayless Tuesdays” have impacted Morrisville State College.
Support “Manos Abiertas” (Open Hands) in Duran, Ecuador
From Wednesday April 2nd through Wednesday April 9th (excluding the weekend) there will be a monetary collection benefiting Manos Albiertas. Manos Albiertas is an after school program for children facing poverty in Duran, Ecuador. The cost of feeding one child is 5 cents, or in other words, $1 to feed 20 children. Also, there will be fact sheets handed out about global hunger. A group of John Carroll students travel to Duran each year for the immersion experience in cooperation with the Rostro de Cristo program. We will be strengthening our relationship with this organization by lending aid to this poverty-stricken area. If you would like more information on how you can help, please contact Shannon Sullivan, ssullivan11@jcu.edu.
“Boxed Lunch Program” to support the Thea Bowman Center
Friday, April 4th from 5 PM to 6 PM, JCU students will have the opportunity to reflect upon hunger in our local community and “make a difference” in the lives of the hungry. As students finish their dinner in the cafeteria, they will have the opportunity to help prepare a boxed lunch for a hungry individual in the nearby community. Students will combine a sandwich that they prepare themselves, a piece of fruit, a snack, and a drink to make these lunches. On the following morning, Saturday (4/5), a group of students will deliver the boxed lunches to the Thea Bowman Center, where there is a significant need. The Thea Bowman Center was the site of this year’s Streak Week Service Project.
“Caution: Hunger?”
During Hunger Week facts and statistics relating to hunger and food waste will be displayed on the Quad. A large sign will be placed on the quad, where the two sidewalks conjoin in front of St. Ignatius. There will also be a visual display made from the trash bags of the cafeteria food waste on a Tray less Tuesday compared to that of a regular Tuesday. There will be caution tape around the display stating something similar to “Caution: Hunger?” In addition, laminated signs on posts will be stuck along the sidewalks containing hunger statistics.
Oxfam America Hunger Banquet
The Oxfam Hunger Banquet will take place on Tuesday, April 8th in Schott Dining Hall. We will be looking for 100 JCU students to volunteer for the banquet. The Hunger Banquet is designed to show the differences in eating consumption between varying classes throughout the world. Upon entering the dining hall, each of the participants will be given a card telling them their financial status, and consequently they will receive a meal that corresponds. The percentage of individuals in each financial class will be proportional to the actual percentage of individuals in each financial class in the world. The Hunger Banquet was developed by Oxfam America. Thank to you to all those who have signed up! We will see you on Monday at 5:30 PM in the Underground.
