Department Information
The department offers courses in the
historical and theoretical study of the visual arts, in addition to
studio arts courses. Art History explores art as a record of human
creativity and allows the work to be experienced in its original
artistic and intellectual context. The scholarly methods used increase
perceptive ability, analytical skills, and understanding of various
cultural traditions, and the facility to express oneself with clarity
and precision - strengths essential to any walk of life and any future
career.
Students make use of the superb art
collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art for their coursework. Those
enrolled in upper-level courses may obtain special permission to use
the extensive research facilities at the Ingalls Library, one of the
largest museum library in the country.
Qualified majors have the opportunity
to gain valuable experience by participating in internships at the
museum, where they may assist with preparation of exhibits, do archival
research on objects, help with public lectures, conduct surveys, work
with public relations, or engage in slide curatorship. Internships are
also available in area arts organizations.
Students are encouraged to take
advantage of the numerous study abroad programs available.
