GUIDELINES FOR INTERNAL RESEARCH FUNDING

The primary purpose of the Committee on Research & Service is to promote, foster and encourage research, publication and quality teaching by directly assisting faculty research and development as much as possible within the limits of available funds.  The Associate Academic Vice President for Academic Programs and Faculty Diversity serves ex officio as the Chair of the Committee on Research and Service. 

I.A. Committee assistance for teaching, research and writing may take the following forms: 

  1. Faculty Instructional Grants.
  2. Purchase of some supplies. 
  3. Secretarial help. 
  4. Student assistance. 
  5. Support of publication, including page costs.  (See Subvention Policy for additional information.)
  6. Microfilming and duplicating off-campus. 
  7. Registration costs for Workshops on Improving Teaching. 

I.B. The following are examples of financial assistance not ordinarily given: 

  1. Purchase of supplies normally provided under department budgetary funds. 
  2. Equipment that accrues permanently to the individual (e.g., the purchase of a camera might not be approved but film purchases might be). 
  3. Supplements to salaries. 
  4. Travel usually provided by the department. Exceptions may be made by the Committee in special cases. 
  5. Repeated subsidy of publication. 
  6. Conference registration. 
  7. Copying, interlibrary loan, computer time (usually provided by the department budget). 

II. The Associate Academic Vice President for Academic Programs and Faculty Diversity has discretionary power to approve research support requests for $300 or less. Amounts greater than $300 must be approved by the Committee.

 III. The Committee reviews and makes recommendations for the following awards: 

  1. Grauel Faculty Fellowship Awards (Categories A and B). 
  2. Summer Research Fellowship Awards (Categories A and B). 
  3. Faculty Instructional Grants
