From the John Carroll University Mission Statement:

The University places primary emphasis on instructional excellence. It recognizes the importance of research in teaching, as well as in the development of the teacher. In keeping with its mission, the University especially encourages research that assists the various disciplines in offering solutions to the problems of the faith in the modern world, social inequities, and human needs.

The University provides a variety of opportunities to full-time tenured and tenure track faculty for professional development. The increasing number of awards in recent years, and the number of teaching awards, indicates the commitment of the University to professional development.

The Faculty Development Office supports the New Faculty Seminar, houses the Center for Teaching & Learning, and coordinates the awarding of teaching and course development fellowships; funds for the development of new or alternative teaching strategies and methods, course materials, and travel to teaching conferences; and, on occasion, the Fellowship in Academic Leadership.

The Academic Vice President's Office awards the Kahl Fellowship for internationalizing the curriculum.
