Research Team Fears it Exposed Kids to HIV

• might accidentally have exposed sick kids to the virus that causes AIDS
• gene therapy experiment with more than two dozen young cancer patients
• researchers at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston
• found out in December, but didn't notify federal regulators until last week
• started contacting parents and patients on Thursday
• treatment may have been contaminated with HIV-1 and HCV, which causes hepatitis C
• two positive tests in a row, but may still be a mistake because the tests are very sensitive and sometimes give a positive result by mistake
• other tests are being done by the Food and Drug Administration to check for sure
