As a School of Business, we have been educating business leaders for over 70 years.  We have definitely made our mark in undergraduate and graduate business education by sending outstanding leaders into the business community. 

• John Carroll University began as St. Ignatius College in 1886.  As we grew and expanded, we changed our name to John Carroll University to commemorate the first bishop of the U.S. who was a Jesuit. 

• In 1934 a Department of Business Administration was established in the College of Arts and Sciences to provide professional training for students aspiring to positions of responsibility in the business world.

• Due to our phenomenal growth, this department was expanded in 1945 into the School of Business, Economics and Government.

• In 1957 we officially shortened the name to School of Business because people got tired of writing out such a long name. 

• In 1974 we added Graduate Programs in Business and started the Master in Business Administration program. 

• In 1988 we received AACSB accreditation for our undergraduate and graduate programs.  Now that was a celebration!

• In 1989, through significant endowment monies, we renovated the School of Business and we also built Bruening Hall as a wing of the School of Business.

• In 1994 we received AACSB accreditation for our Department of Accountancy.

• In 1995 we celebrated our 50th anniversary as a School of Business.  It was a black tie affair with dinner and dancing – very cool.  Of course, a room full of faculty dancing was a pretty funny sight.

• The School of Business was named in honor of John M. and Mary Jo Boler in 1996 for their generosity in giving to the university.

• In 2001 the Graduate Programs in Business started the MS in Accountancy program.

• In 2002 we added Business Information Systems as a seventh major in the Boler School of Business.

• In 2004 we celebrated the 30th anniversary of our MBA program.
