MISSION AND VISION

Our mission and vision statements are based on the core values of the Boler School of Business.  Our core values reflect the culture at John Carroll University.

The Boler School of Business Mission:

The Boler School of Business develops and inspires tomorrow's leaders through educational excellence in the Jesuit tradition

The Vision for the Boler School of Business:

To be recognized as one of the best catholic business schools in the country through developing outstanding socially responsible leaders.

The Core Values of the Boler School of Business:

The Boler School of Business at John Carroll University:

  • strives to foster the ongoing development of the highest standards of personal integrity among all members of its community
  • promotes the achievement of educational excellence through a challenging course of studies
  • emphasizes development and implementation of innovative techniques that keep it at the forefront of the dynamic business-education environment
  • nurtures the intellectual, personal, and moral development of each student and inspires each to become a person for others
  • commits to incorporating an international dimension into its teaching, research, and service programs
  • encourages all of its constituents to develop a sense of belonging and responsibility within the community, to respect and care for one another, and to take actions that they believe promote the common good
  • believes that faculty scholarship is an essential part of the process that couples lifelong learning with teaching excellence

Personal Integrity

Personal integrity refers to an individual’s uprightness of character. Morally upright individuals are honest and fulfill their commitments. A person of integrity treats all human beings with respect, equity, justice, and compassion, seeing in others a reflection of themselves and ultimately of their Creator.

Personal integrity is a necessary component of a complete education. It is essential in achieving respect for oneself, and the respect and cooperation of others. We believe that, in a Jesuit business school, personal integrity is a fundamentally important and crucial value to have and impart.

Educational Excellence

Educational excellence means challenging students academically through a demanding course of studies that:

  • requires students to integrate knowledge of fundamental business concepts and the liberal arts
  • exposes students to leading-edge thinking and skills across business disciplines
  • offers a challenging, interactive environment that develops knowledgeable and forward-thinking students with excellent decision-making and communication skills
  • pushes students to achieve beyond their current level of performance
  • encourages students to test their leadership potential

Part of our mission is to “inspire tomorrow’s leaders through educational excellence.” Only through educational excellence can students develop their leadership potential and grow into more complete individuals.

Innovative Techniques

Continuous improvement is characterized by a learning culture within an organization that embraces innovation and change leading to improved performance. A learning organization, one dedicated to continuous improvement

  • makes continuous alterations in activities based on feedback from the environment
  • implements dramatically new approaches to problems and opportunities that improve organizational performance and may change the nature of the environment in which the organization operates

Life-long learning is a key concept in the Jesuit tradition of education. Continuous learning among students and faculty within the Boler School of Business is important because it leads to forward-thinking and effective leaders. Within the dynamic environment of business education, the Boler School will continue to achieve success because of its emphasis on continuous learning and innovative practices.

Intellectual, Personal and Moral Development

Personal concern for the development of each student means that faculty members and staff treat each student as an individual. We recognize the differences among students and take actions that help them to develop as whole persons.

Personal care for the whole individual, cura personalis, has always been a characteristic of the Jesuit mission. While Jesuit educational institutions have always emphasized academic rigor, they have done so within the context of concern for the whole person whom they are educating. This ideal implies that growth and development of all aspects of a student's life must occur for true leadership to emerge. This ideal manifests itself in the Boler School through faculty and staff who are concerned with emphasizing the intellectual, personal, and moral development of students, as well as inspiring them to become persons for others.

International

A global perspective means

  • an awareness of social, political, economic, technological, and environmental forces and how they influence people and commerce throughout the world
  • an appreciation of the similarities and differences between people and business activities in other countries and cultures
  • a willingness and ability to make use of international variations and interdependencies when making decisions

Advanced telecommunications, improved transportation, increased accessibility to technology, and a host of other factors have made a global perspective mandatory for business success. Employers recognize the importance of an international perspective. They recruit students who have an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, languages, politics, and business practices.

Tomorrow's leaders must be equipped to manage effectively in a rapidly changing business environment. Today's students, therefore, should be intellectually prepared to take advantage of the opportunities and to face successfully the challenges present in the world marketplace.

Respect and Care for One Another

A community can be defined as a group of people who share common interests. The Jesuit notion of community is deeper. It is characterized not only by its members’ proximity or their common pursuits, but also by their shared values, as well as their desire to appreciate the values of others.

The Jesuit notion of community is inclusive rather than exclusive; it is open and expansive rather than closed and insular. By promoting a Jesuit sense of community, the Boler School of Business imbues its members with a sense of belonging to, and responsibility for, a larger whole. It implies their duty to seek mutual understanding with others; it encourages continuous discussion of the concepts of equity and justice; and it fosters the evolution of responsible citizens into leaders in service to others.

Lifelong Learning

Balancing teaching and research in the Boler School of Business is more than just a time-allocation issue. As a core value, the complementarity of research and teaching reflects a passion for learning that has two components:

  • the demand for a lifelong learning orientation among faculty through which they advance the current thinking and practice of their disciplines
  • a strong desire among the faculty to communicate and translate this current thinking to students through teaching excellence

Thus, faculty scholarship is not divorced from the education and mentoring of students but is part of the same process that couples lifelong learning among faculty with teaching excellence.

When students interact with Boler School faculty, they should be exposed to cutting edge ideas that enhance their ability to become leaders of tomorrow. Integrating teaching and research into a single, balanced process gives us the ability to achieve our mission of "inspiring tomorrow's leaders through educational excellence." This integration also sets us apart from other schools in a way that attracts individuals looking for excellence in an academic environment. Finally, the process of integrating teaching and research encourages in students a passion for lifelong learning.
