Top Ten Questions for Gayle Gannon

Mrs. Gayle Gannon

1.) Is the Boler School of Business accredited? Is accreditation important?

The John M. and Mary Jo Boler School of Business at John Carroll University is fully accredited by AACSB International - the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB International, the premier accrediting agency for bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree programs in business administration, assures quality and promotes excellence and continuous improvement. Only institutions providing the highest quality of business education earn this achievement. This means you get the best educational investment and the credentials you need for your future career growth - in fact, some companies will only reimburse tuition for accredited programs. Worldwide, only a select number of schools have earned this distinction.

2.) Do you offer on-campus interviews and class visits?

Yes! We encourage you to learn more about the Boler School's programs by touring our facility, sitting in on a class, speaking with current students and meeting with a member of our staff. John Carroll University has a beautiful campus just outside of the city of Cleveland. The Boler School of Business building includes technology-enabled classrooms designed for Boler's emphasis on classroom interaction. Campus visits and interviews may be arranged by sending an email to grad business@jcu.edu or by calling the Boler School of Business Graduate Programs at (216) 397-1970.

3.) How can I begin the application process?

The first step is to simply complete and return the application form to us directly. Upon receipt, we will create a file for you and update you on your status as you move through our admission review process. Your academic transcripts, letter of recommendation, official GMAT scores, resume, and personal essay can arrive to us separately. You may always contact us at anytime through email at grad business@jcu.edu or by phone at (216) 397-1970 with questions about the status of your application.

4.) When should I apply to the Boler School's Graduate Programs?

It is to your advantage to apply earlier rather than later. Regardless of the deadline of your application packet, the Admissions Committee will give full and fair consideration to your candidacy. Completed application portfolios must be received no later than one month before the beginning of your first semester. The Graduate Business programs accept applications on a continuous basis.  Semesters begin in August, January, May, and July. Students may begin the program in any semester.

5.) I did not major in business in college and do not have a business background. Can I still apply?

Yes! Our programs are designed to meet the educational needs of all academic backgrounds from virtually all areas of study, including liberal arts, business administration, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and law.

6.) Do I need full-time work experience in order to apply to the Graduate Business Programs?

Work experience is not required in the General MBA and MS in Accountancy programs, but having professional experience provides a frame of reference for classroom discussion, and is therefore encouraged.   However, in the Integrated Business Decision Program, at least two years of work experience is required.

7.) Can I waive courses in John Carroll's programs based on prior academic work?

Yes - foundation courses can be waived based on equivalent coursework from an accredited college or university. For an automatic waiver, you must have graduated within the last five years and received a "C" or better in the course as verified by an official transcript. Persons who graduated more than five years previous to starting one of our programs may also have foundation courses waived based on previous coursework and the nature of their work experience.

8.) What is the tuition for the Boler School's Graduate programs?

Tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year is $809 per credit hour for graduate business courses.

9.) How long does it take to complete the part-time programs?

Typically, part-time evening students complete the programs in 2.5 to 4 years. However, this varies based on the student's previous coursework and course waivers. Most part-time students take two courses each semester. Full-time students may complete a program in one year, taking as many as three courses per semester. Classes meet one evening per week from 6:30pm to 9:15pm during the academic year. Summer courses meet two evenings per week from 6:30pm to 9:15pm.

10.) What is the teaching methodology?

Our faculty utilize lectures, case studies, projects, group presentations, interaction with real-world clients, and simulations. Each course uses a different amount of each of these teaching methods based on the subject matter and the professor's preferences. Class sizes are kept small for effective learning.
