Pat Carpenter ’08 - Beaudry Award

Mary Lavin '87, Pat Carpenter '08, Rev. Robert Niehoff, SJ.

The Beaudry Award was established in honor of the late Robert Beaudry of the Class of 1950.  Each year, a graduating senior is recognized by his or her classmates and the University community for exemplary contributions in the areas of academic achievement, Christian life, leadership, and service to the University and civic community during their time as a student.

This year’s recipient of the Beaudry Award is Patrick C. Carpenter ’08. During his four years at John Carroll, Pat held more than 15 leadership positions in campus-based organizations, participated in nearly 15 campus activities outside of the classroom,
and volunteered for about 10 off-campus organizations on an on-going basis. And, by the way, he did attend classes, too – and did very
well.

Pat served as the Student Coordinator for one of his three spring break immersion experiences, led three of his four Manresa retreats, became a Founding Father of Beta Theta and served as a member of the One-in-Four Male Sexual Assault Awareness Group. He served as the president of the University Concert Choir, social chair for the Organization of Resident Assistants, public relations chair for the Student Education Association, the volunteers chair for the Homecoming Committee, activities chair for the 2008 JCU Relay For Life, and as a student representative on several campus committees.

Off-campus, Pat tutored at schools, including Gesu Catholic School and Agnon Hebrew School; mentored a young boy through the Seeds of Hope/ Big Brother, Big Sister Program; and assisted in caring for homeless people through the St. Benedict Joseph Labre Project. He has also been a member of the Campus Crusade for Christ, served as a lector and Eucharistic minister, and participated in the Guidance Retreat, which develops leaders in the campus ministry community.

Now the Berea, Ohio, native is taking his Early Childhood Education degree and heading to Boston for two years of service with the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps, teaching in a parochial elementary school, while working on his master’s in education at Boston College. Pat sums it all up simply, saying,It’s a nice feeling to get involved and know you’re helping people and know you’re having an impact on people.”
