Come to College Goal Sunday at John Carroll

  • See Press Release

  • Listen to an mp3 file of an interview featuring our own Brian Williams on
    WTAM regarding “College Goal Sunday.”

John Carroll University is one of three Cleveland-area sites selected to host College Goal Sunday, a national event in which parents and students across Northeast Ohio will have expert help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the fall 2008-spring 2009 academic year. This application is used by most U.S. colleges and universities and is required when applying for most federal, state and institution-specific assistance for college or technical school.

College Goal Sunday at John Carroll is February 10, 2-4 p.m., in the Dolan Center for Science and Technology.Pre-registration at http://www.oasfaa.org/docs/forms/CGSReg.html  is not required, but is encouraged.

While hosted at John Carroll University, College Goal Sunday is for any student interested in higher education. Financial aid professionals from several Ohio colleges and universities will be on hand to walk students and parents through the aid application process and help complete the forms necessary for grants, loans, student employment and other types of assistance.

Common Myths about Financial Aid

The Enrollment Division’s Common Myths about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is articulated at greater length on John Carroll University’s Enrollment  web pages, but Brian Williams, university vice president for Enrollment, wants students and their parents to get beyond the widely held misperceptions about FAFSA and the aid process. A few of the more common FAFSA myths are listed below. For a complete list, visit the JCU financial aid web site: www.jcu.edu/aidjcu/myths.htm

  • The FAFSA form is too hard to fill out.
  • I should pay for college search services to help me find more private scholarship funds.
  • I won’t apply for financial aid because I know I won’t get any federal aid.
  • We’re not filing a FAFSA.  Our income is too high to qualify.
  • We have money saved for our child’s college education, so we won’t get any aid.
  • We didn’t receive any financial aid last year, so we won’t be eligible this year either.
  • Private colleges are just too expensive.
  • I don’t want to take out large loans to repay when I graduate.
  • I need to be a straight “A” student or a super athlete to get a scholarship.
  • I don’t want a job during school, so I can focus on my grades.
  • I will commute to college to save my family money.
  • Our child will attend college part-time, so he won't be eligible for financial aid.

Williams says none of the myths carries significant truth, and that those untruths should not keep students and their parents from filling out FAFSA forms.

John Carroll will offer additional, group financial aid presentations as well as personal appointments for high school seniors and transfer students throughout February and March.
