RODNEY GALLAWAY WINS ALPHA SIGMA NU SCHOLARSHIP FROM ALBERT J. DEGULIS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND.

Rodney Gallaway ’08 is the consummate JCU student. The senior from Loudonville, Ohio, is second eldest of six children, so his responsibilities as a Resident Assistant come naturally to him. His role as president of the crew team – coaxing fellow rowers along as they ease their sculls up the Cuyahoga – is second nature to him, as well.

The dual major in mathematics and adolescent young adult education is contemplating a year of service – in keeping with the John Carroll mission -- followed by a career in teaching after he graduates in May. Pursuit of a master’s degree in high school counseling may be a little further out on his horizon.

As if all that isn’t enough to make him a so-called poster child for John Carroll, Rodney Gallaway holds the current Alpha Sigma Nu scholarship made possible by the Albert J. DeGulis Endowed Scholarship Fund. He also holds the Rev. Joseph O. Schell Ignatian Award for Excellence in Education; the Rev. Joseph Owens, S.J., Scholarship Fund, and the Frank and Frances Guinta Scholarship.

“I am so pleased and proud to know that our endowed scholarship fund is helping an outstanding Alpha Sigma Nu student like Rodney Gallaway. We must do everything we can to support these young adults and this university so that it continues to be a vital and deeply Jesuit center of higher learning,” says Albert J. DeGulis ’56, longstanding John Carroll board member, past president of the JCU National Alumni Association, and Alumni Medal honoree in 2004.

“I originally chose JCU for a combination of reasons,” Gallaway says, “but I was particularly attracted to the math and science facilities.

“While I chose the mathematics academic route, I find the involvement in extracurricular activities to be one of the best aspects of my time at JCU.”

He was a member of the 2007 Summer Orientation Staff, and, in addition to Alpha Sigma Nu honors, serves as vice president of Pi Mu Epsilon (math honor society) and Phi Eta Sigma honor society.

“In my spare time, I am active in intramural football, basketball, softball, and ultimate Frisbee,” he adds.

“The completion of the rigorous JCU education will be one of the utmost honors of my life,” Gallaway says. “I have found that the best quality of the great JCU community is the personal touch that all receive here.”
