Tom Haren ’08– Millor Orator

In honor of the late Rev. William J. Millor, S.J., who served the University in a variety of posts over 28 years, the Senior Class designates a member of the graduating class to be the student speaker at the annual spring commencement.

This year’s Millor Orator is Thomas G. Haren ’08 from Lowellville, Ohio, in Mahoning County.

Tom knows that one aspect of Jesuit education is to inspire students to be men or women for others. But, as he said in his Millor Orator address, he believes that “as college students, we’re not only men and women for others, but men and women for, with and because of others.”

His life at John Carroll University and his goals in life are testament to that belief. Tom has been active in the One-in-Four Male Sexual Assault Awareness Group. He is a member of Students Today Leaders Forever, which includes Spring Break service projects in various cities around the country.

He is also involved in the St. Benedict Joseph Labre Project, in which John Carroll students deliver food, clothing and other needs to homeless people.

This fall, Tom will start classes at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and he says he’d like to work in an area of law that will enable him to do pro bono work and have more of a socio-political impact.
