Students return to new dining hall and housing options
'Extreme Makeovers' in Schott and Murphy 4

John Carroll University, partnering with Aramark, brought the Fresh Food Company to Schott Dining Hall to enhance the dining experience at John Carroll University. Patrons can choose to dine in an eclectic, modern and colorful restaurant featuring seven separate serving areas: American Diner (Grill), Bakery, Comfort, Deli, International Grill, Mediterranean (Pizza), and Produce Market (Salad Bar). Patrons also enjoy the added benefit of “all-you-care-to-eat."

Menus change daily. Fresh product is delivered directly to each station and food is prepared or "finished" in front of customers. Every station has its own distinctive service ware and all servers are trained to engage the customers in making such choices as seasoning, sauces, and ingredients.

Another noteworthy change -- in keeping with John Carroll’s green initiatives – is that Schott Dining Hall’s Fresh Food Company has gone “trayless” this year.  Benefits realized at other colleges and universities where trays have been eliminated range from reduced food waste – 33-66 percent according to some studies – water and energy conservation, and healthier eating habits.

“Going trayless also feels more like you’re eating at home,” adds Eugene D. Walters, district marketing manager - Aramark Higher Education. “It’s a win-win decision that benefits the university and students, alike.”

Entrepreneurs’ House – expands housing options

In other residential updates over the summer, John Carroll established Entrepreneurs’ House in Murphy Hall.

“Entrepreneurs’ House provides a unique living environment for students from any academic major who are interested in innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship,” says Mark K. Hauserman ’68, director, The Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship at John Carroll.

While technically not in a “house,” Entrepreneurs’ House students reside together on the fourth floor of Murphy. A new lounge for their exclusive use was completed on Murphy 4 over the summer, equipped with computers and other tools to assist them in their search for knowledge about entrepreneurship. Funding for the new facility was generously provided by several donors who are members of John Carroll’s Entrepreneurs Association.

Entrepreneurs’ House residents also will have opportunities to interact with and learn from Cleveland-area entrepreneurs and participate in special programs planned throughout the school year.

About 20 students have requested this housing option for the 2008-2009 academic year. Mr. Hauserman is confident those numbers will grow quickly as word spreads about the new facilities and opportunities they afford.
