October Update - 10/30/2009
The Health Center has had 49 students report ill with flu-like symptoms since the start of school in August. 20% of these students have reported in the past week. This is a relatively low number compared to other college campuses. Most students are able to recover at home. The JCU recovery center remains an option on campus. We have completed the first seasonal flu vaccine at the Health center and are waiting on the next shipment to arrive. The H1N1 flu mist vaccine is still available at the health center (approximately 30 doses still remain).

H1N1 Update Page - 09/02/2009
As students head back to class this fall, John Carroll has created this page to provide the latest information on the H1N1 flu virus, including steps you can take to prevent airborne illnesses. We continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates, as needed.
The University created a pandemic flu committee in 2006 to prepare for the “bird flu.” The committee has widened its scope to include any pandemic flu and created a pandemic flu plan which appears in the links to the right on this page.
Members of the pandemic flu committee have made presentations to various departments to inform them of the University’s plan, and all Resident Advisors (RA’s) attended a pandemic presentation during their orientation in August.
We also have posted hand-washing signs in residence halls and University buildings, and have increased the number of hand sanitizers in public areas.
If there is an outbreak, we will follow the University plan outlined on this website, as well as recommendations from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and Centers for Disease Control.
John Carroll students and parents of students are encouraged to contact Sherri Crahen, dean of students, at 216.397.3010 or Garry Homany, manager of regulatory affairs and risk management, at 216.397.1982 with any questions.
