John Carroll University Junior is named 2008 Truman Scholar
Joshua Marcin is chosen from a field of nearly
600 candidates nationwide

Joshua Marcin, a junior at John Carroll University, has been named a 2008 Truman Scholar. He is one of 65 scholarship recipients named today. The Political Science and Spanish double major was selected for the prestigious award from among 595 applicants nationwide.

Joshua, of Akron, Ohio, is one of the inaugural JCU Arrupe Scholars in Social Action and, in the summer of 2007, served as an intern in the university’s newly established Poverty and Solidarity program. He is the founding editor of the recently created JCU student magazine, World View. In his Truman essay, he articulated policy options to support ex-offenders as they reenter society after prison.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation annually provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection.  The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development.

Congress established the foundation following President Truman’s death in 1972.  The foundation is considered to be a living memorial. The mission of the foundation is to find and recognize students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to making a difference by pursing careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service.

Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State, is the president of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation.
