GENERAL INFORMATION
The Campus Ministry Team was organized in 1971 by former president Father Joseph Schell, S.J. The ministry team replaced the university chaplain; its programs that depend upon attraction replaced mandatory religious observances, both moves that had been taking place in Catholic and Jesuit schools across the United States in the wake of Vatican II.
The purpose of the Campus Ministry Team at John Carroll University is to assist and stimulate the University's efforts to provide opportunities for students to develop the intellectual, moral and spiritual principles needed for leading value and God centered lives, meeting new problems and engaging in responsible social action. Members of the Campus Ministry Team aim at helping students deepen their spiritual lives and encouraging them to respond to the needs of others and the demands of justice.
Campus Ministry is one of the departments in Student Affairs. The University places great emphasis upon the spiritual dimension of its mission and the spiritual welfare of the members of the university community, staff and faculty as well as students.
This spiritual dimension of our mission is not something separate from the academic enterprise. The members of the Campus Ministry Team are intent on the education of the men and women who study here, and members of the faculty are concerned with their spiritual as well as their intellectual growth. All at Carroll are part of the ministerial dimension of the school. Campus ministry is intended to be a focal point of that university effort, not the sole area where such efforts are made. We welcome the participation of faculty, staff and students as part of our team effort as well as recipients of that ministry
