RESIDENT MINISTRY

A Resident Minister (RM) is considered an integral part of the Campus Ministry staff and represents the department in the residence halls.  Resident Ministers also work in conjunction with Residence Life staff, supporting them in cultivating community and promoting the mission of John Carroll University through education, service, advocacy and prayer and reflection.  Resident Ministers serve as a mentor and role model to undergraduate students.  Their pastoral presence and programs are always rooted in a faith-based context.  The mission of RMs is to engage and animate the residents in order to integrate spiritual development with daily life and learning. 

Expectations of Resident Ministers
RMs are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, including evening and weekends in order to be available to resident students on a regular and consistent basis. In collaboration with the Campus Ministry staff, Resident Ministers are responsible for initiating and/or implementing a variety of programs and activities that engage resident students in a faith that does justice. RMs also attend weekly staff meetings and weekly area meetings in the residence hall, as well as bi-weekly Campus Ministry staff meetings.  Other major responsibilities of Resident Ministers are:

  • Participate in and provide hospitality at Sunday worship (6pm or 10pm), and all major university liturgies
  • Facilitate a weekly faith sharing group with residents
  • Plan at least one major Campus Ministry program per semester
  • Plan and implement at least 4 hall-based programs per semester
  • Participate in an immersion experience (at the discretion of Campus Ministry staff)

Resident Ministers participate in the Parent's Weekend MassQualifications

  • Familiarity with and appreciation of the Jesuit, Catholic nature of JCU
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Enrollment in graduate school or employment at JCU
  • Familiarity with Ignatian Spirituality and Jesuit identity
  • Candidate must live in the residence halls

Compensation
The remuneration for this position is a furnished apartment in the residence halls, a board plan, and an annual $5000.00 stipend.  In addition, Resident Ministers are also offered free parking, free access to all JCU recreational facilities, and use of the JCU library.

Start/End Date: August 12, 2008 - May 31, 2009

  3. Describe how your faith journey or commitment to spirituality will assist you as a Resident Minister.
  4. Please comment on the graduate program you are applying for, or other employment at JCU, as well as other significant commitments that will occupy your time during the fall and spring semesters.   Please indicate whether or not you are applying for a Graduate Assistantship in addition to the Resident Ministry program.

Process Timeline:
Friday, April 4 (DEADLINE EXTENSION) - Deadline for applications (including letters of reference)
April 14-17, 2008 - Interviews conducted
April 26, 2008 - Resident Minister position offers extended
May 2, 2008 - Resident Ministers must accept/decline offer
