John Carroll University resides in the Heights area located about 10 miles East of Cleveland.  This includes the cities of University Heights (John Carroll is the city’s namesake), Shaker Heights, South Euclid, Cleveland Heights, and Beachwood. 

Regarding University Heights, which was originally named Idlewood Village at the turn of the century, but became University Heights in 1925 when John Carroll University, previously named St. Ignatius College, moved from the near West side of Cleveland to its present location.  More than 39% of John Carroll University’s 539 employees live in the cities of University Heights, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, South Euclid and Beachwood.  The university also pays property tax on non-campus properties like residential and retail.

John Carroll University is the largest single income tax generator for the city of University Heights; the university contributed more than $900,000 or 10% of the city’s total income tax revenue in 2007.  More than 14,000 people who reside within the 1.9 square miles of University Heights, which is located 8.2 miles east of downtown Cleveland.

The university offers one full tuition ROTC scholarship to graduates of University Heights / Cleveland Heights high school.

John Carroll University is a prestigious intellectual community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  Ongoing university events that are open to local residents include: VITA tax program, tickets to football games, campus events, lectures on campus, plus other cultural, educational, and athletic events like the annual community Memorial Day parade which ends on campus.  Each fall, the university offers “Community Day’ where local residents and city officials are invited to athletic events like soccer and football and the Homecoming “Street Fair.”

The university provides self contained services, such as garbage pick-up, snow removal, and first response security for the campus, therefore limiting the efforts by local cities.

The university’s students, faculty and staff, provide more than 37,000 hours annually of community service (through Center for Service and Social Action) and provide other much needed services like student teaching and volunteer programs within the local school systems and community agencies.

The university maintains 60+ acres with landscaped lawns, many variety of trees and flower beds, as well as over 1.5 million square feet of structured space of high quality and aesthetically pleasing architecture.

The university’s campus is open to the community for recreational strolls, dog and stroller walking, etc.

University Heights scores high marks for ease of shopping and the variety of stores and services offered.  However, it is the rich diversity of people that marks the community with its distinctive character.  Houses
of worship, representing all major religious denominations, are located in or near the city
