CRIME PREVENTION

Campus crime prevention is a way to make JCU a safer place to live and learn.  By becoming aware of the crimes that occur most often on campus, you can learn ways to reduce your chances of becoming a victim, and ultimately prevent crime.

If you only remember one crime prevention tip, it's this:
The most effective precaution against crime is to be aware of what is happening around you, all the time.

Campus Safety Services is concerned with the safety of each and every member of the JCU community, and does its part to promote crime prevention.  Read below to view a few ways that you can prevent crime.

Timely Notifications

John Carroll University is required to provide the university community with information in a timely fashion regarding criminal activity that might represent an ongoing threat to the safety of the students and employees.

Those crimes that would require a timely notification are: murder, sex offenses - forcible and non-forcible, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, manslaughter, and arson.

Image of Notification NoticeThe manner in which this information is conveyed may include, but are not limited to: e-mail notification, Carroll News articles, Campus Watch newsletters, and fliers posted on campus.

Fliers will be formatted similar to the one seen here.  They will be printed on fluorescent yellow paper.  They will also display the validation stamp from the Office of Student Activities.

Students, faculty, and staff should be attentive to the information that is contained in these notifications.  Anyone with relevant information concerning the notices is encouraged to call Campus Police at (216) 397-1234 or the Tip Line at (216) 397-1515.

Identity Theft

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America affecting half a million new victims each year. In the course of a day you may write a check at the drugstore, charge tickets to a concert, call home on your cell phone, or apply for a credit card. Chances are you don't give these routine transactions a second thought. But, others have.

Individuals need to become actively involved in protecting their personal information. To learn more on how to prevent becoming a victim of identity theft or what to do if you are a victim, go to the Federal Trade Commission's web site at, www.ftc.gov click on the link FOR CONSUMERS and select the information on Identity Theft. To report identity theft, contact Campus Police at (216) 397-1234.
