For many students it is their first time away from home. These students will bring with them various items of personal property (i.e., radios, personal computers, etc.) which could be targets for crime. Most thefts that occur in residence halls are due to a victim's room which is found unlocked and unoccupied. The following are some helpful suggestions in decreasing your chances of becoming a crime victim:
- Do not prop open any residence hall exterior door.
This could enable an intruder to access the building.
- This insures safety of all residents.
- Keep the doors to your rooms locked when you leave and be sure to take your keys along.
- It only takes a few seconds to become a victim."
- Keep your door locked while you or your roommate is sleeping.
- Refrain from posting notes on your door informing others that no one is in the room.
- Don't open your door unless you know who is on the other side.
- Consider keeping a list of all your valuables.
- Keys should not be attached to university I.D.
- Any suspicious individuals or activities should be reported to Campus Safety Services at (216) 397-4600.
