The Vice President for Student Affairs is the administrative leader for the Division of Student Affairs, providing vision and leadership for all areas of student development. The Vice President oversees all functions of the Division and directly supervises the following divisional administrators: the Dean of Students, the Dean for Student Development, the Assistant Vice President for Assessment and Planning in Student Affairs, Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs, and the Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation.

The primary purpose of this office is to enhance student learning on campus reflective of the values and traditions inherent in the Jesuit vision of education. In order to better serve and educate students, the Dean of Students is a leader in assuring the effective facilitation and management of both services and programs. In fulfilling this role, the Dean assists the Vice President in leading and directing the Division of Student Affairs. This includes strategic planning, divisional communication, professional development, and educational initiatives. The Dean of Students Office is comprised of an Administrative Assistant, the Associate Dean of Students and the Office of Developmental Programming.

The Dean's Office is responsible for overseeing the general administration, staffing, and policies of several departments including the following: the University Counseling Center, Campus Safety Services, Services for Students with Disabilities, Student Health Center, and the Office of Student Activities. The university disciplinary system is run out of this office. The daily operations of the disciplinary systems are performed by the Associate Dean of Students and the Coordinator of Developmental Programming. The overall disciplinary system is supervised by the Dean of Students.

The Associate Dean of Students, housed in the Dean of Students Office, provides leadership for University Dining Services. The Office is responsible for a variety of functions within the Division of Student Affairs and is primarily responsible for coordinating the daily operations of the university disciplinary system.

The Office of Developmental Programming coordinates campus-wide wellness initiatives in collaboration with members of the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs and is a part of the Dean of Students Office. These initiatives may include programming on alcohol and drug use, sexual assault, sexuality, smoking cessation, academic skill building, stress management, civic engagement, nutrition, eating disorders, personal safety, diversity, and life skills such as leadership and financial management. The Office of Developmental Programming also serves as a consultant to departments in the development, implementation, advertisement, and assessment of specialized programs that enhance and foster student learning.

Athletics and Recreation

The Athletic and Recreation Department offers updated sports facilities, a strong, organized athletic program, and recreational opportunities of many kinds to all students. JCU currently sponsors intercollegiate competition in 21 sports. The Athletic Department also oversees the Club Sport programs, which offer competitive opportunities for students who desire a more structured recreational program. Additionally, the Intramural program provides competitive opportunities for approximately 1,500 students.

The Recreation Department offers a large variety of fitness and dance classes to students, faculty and staff. The on-campus athletic facilities include the Johnson Natatorium, the Gym Annex and the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center which includes a 1,300 seating capacity in the varsity gym. The Center also contains a wrestling room, equipment room, full training and rehabilitation room as well as the offices of the athletic department. The second indoor facility, the Recreation Center, provides additional recreational facilities; two all-purpose courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis, three racquetball courts, an indoor banked running track, conditioning room and locker facilities.

The addition of the Ralph Vince Fitness Center, dedicated on February 23, 1991, has rounded out the recreational opportunities for all students, staff and faculty. Cybex and free weight equipment offer state-of-the-art fitness and weight training settings. Stairmasters, life cycles, treadmills, and climbers offer a variety of opportunities for cardiovascular improvement.

The outdoor facilities consist of the Don Shula Football Stadium, Wasmer Field, Bracken softball field, Schweickert baseball field, and tennis courts. The outdoor complex contains soccer and football practice fields which can also serve as multipurpose outdoor recreation areas. The Don Shula Stadium is home of the Blue Streaks' football, soccer and track teams. Adjoining the stadium are three tennis courts, which are used for intercollegiate, instructional, and recreational play.

The University places great emphasis upon the spiritual dimension of its mission and the spiritual welfare of the members of the University community: staff, administrators, and faculty as well as students from all faith traditions. The Campus Ministry team at John Carroll University assists and stimulates the University's efforts to provide opportunities to develop the intellectual, moral and spiritual principles needed in order to lead a value and God centered life - a life lived for others.

The Campus Ministry staff welcomes the opportunities we have to bring a Catholic and Ignatian faith perspective to bear on issues and trends that may surface in various disciplines. Campus Ministry also strives to help the JCU community develop the tools necessary to meet new challenges and to engage in responsible social action. Faculty, administrators, staff and students are welcome and encouraged to join the Campus Ministry Staff in the effort to promote an intellectual community that seeks both wisdom, and a fuller spiritual life.

Campus Safety Services officers work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as part of the commissioned police force monitoring campus, promoting personal safety, and encouraging personal responsibility for safety. In addition to safety patrols by vehicle, bike, and foot, building checks, and parking management, CSS officers answer telephone calls for service, provide escorts upon request, check alarms, and investigate suspicious situations.

Liturgical Music and Musical Arts

Liturgical Music and Musical Arts is home to a number of choral and instrumental groups performing throughout the school year at both special and campus-wide events from Mass of the Holy Spirit which kicks off the academic year to commencement at the year's end. Fine arts music courses are also offered through this department.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) supports the academic success and overall adjustment to campus life of students of color.  Additionally, it promotes a holistic educational experience for the university community by fostering an appreciation of and respect for all cultures through a variety of programs, campus activities and curricular development.  The OMA seeks to increase the understanding and highlight cultural differences and similarities of racial and underrepresented groups (African American, Latina/o, Asian, Native American, Middle Eastern, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender).

Through direct service to students and by promoting a welcoming campus environment, the OMA seeks to enhance the recruitment, retention, success, and graduation rates of students of color.  The OMA provides scholarships, grants, mentors, social activities and support services to students.  In addition, the OMA works with other university offices, departments and organizations to improve awareness of and appreciation for racial and cultural diversity.  Its staff designs and presents cultural and educational programs to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse campus community.  The office also assists in recruiting candidates of color and in providing personal and professional growth opportunities.

The Office of Orientation and Student Transitions serves three main purposes. The primary function is to plan and coordinate all of the orientation processes for incoming John Carroll students. The office will also coordinate programs and initiatives to keep the parents of John Carroll students connected to the JCU community. Finally, this office will serve as a contact point and provide programs for all students who will be commuting from home while attending John Carroll.

The residence halls at John Carroll University provide more than just a room in which to study and sleep. The community living environment and developmental programs offered in the halls support and enhance the educational goals of John Carroll University. Residence Life staff are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment conducive to sound academic pursuit, promoting the concepts of community living by emphasizing self-responsibility and respect for others, creating opportunities for student involvement and personal development, and offering advice and information to residents.

Undergraduate students known as Resident Assistants (RAs) serve as peer advisers, facilitators, administrators, and community builders for residents in their living environments. The Director of Residence Life assumes overall responsibility for the development of an environment conducive to student's personal, academic, and social development in the residential units. The Area Coordinator (AC) is a professional staff member who serves as the administrator and supervisor of a group of residence halls or a single hall.

Eight residence halls offer living options ranging from traditional two residents per room with community bathroom accommodations to suite-style living quarters for seniors. The total maximum capacity of the residence halls is 1,964 residents.

The Office of Student Activities (OSA) encourages involvement, promotes leadership development, and enhances student learning.  By creating and advising co-curricular experiences, the OSA assists students in gaining the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be servant leaders in the Jesuit tradition.

The OSA advises and organizes:  Leadership Development, Emerging Leader Program, Student Programming, Student Organizations, Greek Life, Student Union, Student Union Programming Board, tickets to theater and music productions through the Kulas Grant, Christmas Carroll Eve, Senior Celebration Week, Homecoming, Winter Formal, Relay for Life, Millor Orator, and the Spring Concert.  Additionally, the office provides a number of student organization resources including:  fleet vehicle reservations, sound system reservations, program planning assistance, publicity requests, and the University posting policy.

The Dean of Student Development Office supervises several offices: Campus Ministry, Liturgical Music and Musical Arts, and Residence Life. The primary responsibility of this office is to help create and sustain a vibrant community for resident students and is to explore and initiate programs and services to further the spiritual development of all students.

Student Health Center

The Student Health Center provides a number of clinical services to students including: blood work, consultation with a nutritionist, consultation with eating disorder specialists, a GYN clinic, free over-the-counter medications, allergy injections, TB testing, Menactra vaccine for Meningitis, Flu vaccinations, immunizations for immersion program participants, and transportation to off-campus medical appointments. The Center is staffed by Registered Nurses during the academic year from 9:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Doctors are available daily, Monday through Friday from 9:00am until 10:00am. No appointments are necessary.

University Counseling Center

The University Counseling Center (UCC) provides mental health counseling to the students of John Carroll University, both graduate and undergraduate. Over the past several years, increasing numbers of college students arrive on campuses across the country already experiencing anxiety and/or depression. The Center supports those students and others struggling with issues such as:

  • adjustment to college
  • family difficulties
  • life trauma or personal crisis
  • loneliness
  • roommate problems/relationships
  • self-esteem building
  • stress management

The UCC is also available for consultation to members of the faculty who may have concerns about a student and in search of guidance or support.

University Dining Services

University Dining Services by ARAMARK provides three levels of service including retail, student dining, and catering. Over 130 people work in this department providing continuous dining service from 7:30am until 7:00pm Monday through Thursday, 7:30am through 6:00pm on Friday and 11:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
