CLINICS & PROGRAMS

The Student Health Center provides access to the following clinics and programs:

GYN Clinic

  • GYN Clinic is offered once a month, usually on a Wednesday morning from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Dr. Mitchell Reider, Board Certified Gynecologist and Obstetrician, examines students with gynecological concerns, performs breast exams, routine PAP testing, and all STI testing. An appointment can be made by calling the Student Health Center at (216) 397-4349. There is a fee to see Dr. Reider and for any lab testing done.

Travel Clinic

  • The Student Health Center offers a Travel Clinic for international travel. Cuyahoga County Board of Health manages the travel clinic for all groups. The clinic is usually scheduled on a weekday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The physician performs a routine physical exam and instructs students on the health implications they may face when traveling to the out-of-the-country areas. Students are notified in advance of the vaccinations they are required to receive and the cost of these vaccinations.

Nutrition Program

  • There is a Nutrition program offered twice a month with Karin Palmer, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist. Karin comes to the Student Health Center on Friday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm to see students with eating and nutritional concerns. Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Awareness Program

  • The Student Health Center and the Student Health Advisory Committee sponsors a Sexually Transmitted Infection Awareness Program, STI Awareness, to any residence hall assistant requesting this program. The presentation is given by a group of students, known as the Student Health Advisory Committee, who have completed a training session with a Health Educator. Each infection is briefly explained in terms of signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention. A student learning outcome survey is completed by each student attending after the program.

Students Against Smoking

  • Mission: Students Against Smoking wants to represent the rights of the non-smoker. It is the right of the non-smoker to breathe clean air, free of harmful carcinogens that are contained within cigarette smoke. Secondly, they want to decrease the overall amount of smoking among students, faculty, and staff at John Carroll University.
  • What Progress has been made: The group has met as a committee for almost two years under the guidance of Rose Bentivegna. They have gained support from all of the Vice Presidents, Student Union, and the University Council. They have been successful in getting at least one entrance of every building on campus to be smoke free. Click the following link to see the location of the entrances.
  • Tobacco Awareness: November will be "smoke-out" month, in which there will be a passive programming campaign in the Atrium of the Student Center. Students Against Smoking and the Student Health Center will be encouraging students to quit smoking. The Health Center will direct smokers to a free program offered by the American Cancer Society, where they will learn strategies to quit smoking.
  • How do I get Involved?: Contact the health center by telephone at (216) 397-4349 or by e-mail (pnemecek@jcu.edu) and your name and information will be passed on to the group leader.
