Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
“Immersion trip experiences are the most unique opportunity that John Carroll provides. I’m a strong believer in everything they stand for and the mission they stand behind. I want to be a student leader to guide others in fully becoming a part of a new community and providing service in areas that greatly deserve it.”
What is your most recent immersion experience?
“I attended the immersion trip last year to Bethlehem Farm in West Virginia.”
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?"One of the best things I took away from the trip is that I found I could accomplish a lot more than I previously believed…Beyond that, I learned there was more to doing service than giving time and things to people that needed it. It was about listening and living in a means that understands everyone around you and what they need. This included hearing my group members and the leaders on the farm and recognizing they are looking for something as well that needs constant consideration.”
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
“The environmental and religious values that we discussed at the farm were intense and powerful. They stay with me today and I’m often thinking about how to inspire others how to live simply in a way that we learned there.” |

What immersion experience do you have? “I participated in the Ecuador immersion this past summer, 2008”
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
“Being a woman for others means showing care and concern for everyone and everything around me. To me this world is made up of a variety of people, all of whom, must work together to survive.” |

Favorite Quote:"Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will effect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything"- Fr. Pedro Arrupe
Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
“I want to serve as a leader for an immersion experience because of how much service means to me. My most recent trip to Louisville, KY was absolutely phenomenal. I would love to work with a co-leader to bring that experience to other students, especially students who have never been on an immersion experience before.”
What immersion experience have you had?
“I have been on immersion trips to the Dominican Republic for 5 weeks my senior year of high school. I went to New Orleans my freshman year of college, I have worked in the inner cities of Cleveland, my native Washington D.C. and most recently I went to Louisville, KY last spring break.”
What is something you learned from your immersion experiences?
“If we want to create peace in the world, peace then has to start in our own lives.” |

Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
“I would like to serve as a student leader for an immersion experience because I want to help make my fellow students’ experiences be as significant as my previous experience was. I want to work alongside my peers in creating a memorable experience in which we can all work, learn, and grow together while actively participating in an extraordinary experience that many people may never have the opportunity to partake in.”
What immersion experience have you had?
“This spring break I went on the Baltimore Immersion experience.”
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
"Seeing people with nothing who still have stronger faith then I feel I have at times, and the daily reflections helped me to grow spiritually. Interacting with so many different people who all are faced with extreme obstacles in their daily lives made me a more empathetic person…When I hear the phrase men and women for others, I always think of the ethics of care that I learned in philosophy class. One of the stages in becoming ethically developed is a transition from selfishness to responsibility.”
What is something you learned from your immersion experience? We are encouraged to accept our social responsibility, we are encouraged to give of ourselves, to reach out to others and to see their needs and do what we can to fulfill their needs and better their lives. It means take the resources we are given and put them to use the best we can in order to meet the needs of others who may be less fortunate then ourselves.” |

Favorite Quote: “People say, 'What is the sense of our small effort?' They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time.” -Dorothy Day
Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
“I participated in the 2007 immersion experience to New Orleans and had an amazing experience. One of the FSA’s on the trip shared a poem with us about the city, and in that poem a connection with the city was described. It said that New Orleans would let you know if you belong there because when you leave you will be homesick for her. Ever since I returned to Cleveland last January I have been homesick for New Orleans.”
What immersion experience have you had?
“Last January I was lucky enough to participate in the immersion experience to New Orleans. This experience changed my life.”
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
“To hear the various stories of the people in New Orleans really showed our group how people face and overcome adversity.” |

Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
“I want to be a student leader to help motivate people to make a change in this world…This is something I am passionate about as a student leader at a Jesuit University, and one of the best ways to be a “woman for others” and express the Jesuit values of education, service, social justice, community, and spirituality.”
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
“During my trip to New Orleans, I discovered many things about myself as well as the other citizens of this country. I felt a connection to the people, the anger, the sadness, the hope, and the wonderful sense of community in the city and surrounding parishes…The immersion experience was more than I expected it to be and something unlike I have experienced before.”
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
“The natives of New Orleans are proud of who they are and what they have made of New Orleans after the storm. These people taught me about the importance of discussing social issues and becoming more knowledgeable of these issues the community is facing; I was able to understand their struggles and try to help to the best of my ability. I learned about the devastation, the struggle to survive, and the value of culture, family and friends, and the value of shelter. They taught me the value of service to our neighbors and how much a smile and helping hand can give hope when all hope seems lost.” |

Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
“Honestly I didn’t thing that I would go on another John Carroll Immersion Experience after spending a semester in El Salvador, but I feel as if I have a responsibility to share my experience with others in a way that others were able to share their stories with me.”
What is your most recent immersion experience?
“Nicaragua. Highpoints of the Nicaragua experience included the great meetings we were able to have before and during the trip. We were able, in our pre-departure meetings, to learn a lot about the reality and get good insights into the history and situation in Nicaragua before leaving. And then also when we were there, the meetings that we went to were very interesting and covered a wide range of topics relating to the economy. Another highpoint was how the majority of us bonded while we were on the trip.”
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
“Being a man for others, to me is not just being a man for others; it’s about being a man for and with others. The reason why I say this is because one of the things that I struggled with during the Nicaragua experience was that I felt like I wasn’t really doing anything by just sitting there listening to people, at the time it felt inadequate to me. The Casa program has taught me that service is not only a way to feel like you are doing something, you can be even more beneficial by just listening to people and accompanying them.” |

What is your most recent immersion experience
Ecuador (May 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
My immersion experience has taught me to be a woman for others. I learned that more social injustices occur in our country than many of us are aware of and we must educate others to help make change. I’ve learned that doing something for others is the best feeling one could experience.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
My immersion experience opened my eyes to injustice in the world. It made me want to continue to serve in any way possible. I have more compassion and understanding for others than I thought was possible. Favorite Quote: “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Mother Theresa
Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
I want to serve as a student coordinator because I know through my own experience with immersion experiences that there is a great opportunity for people to learn about social justice issues in our world while connecting with a community we wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to interact. I try to be an individual committed to social justice and what better way than to help educate others on social justice, while continuing my understanding of social justice and commitment to solidarity and service.
What is your most recent immersion experience?
Jamaica (May 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
In Jamaica, I really began to understand the inter-relation of the many issues surrounding social justice. A moment that really sticks with me from my experience is when a Jamaican told our group that it was important to remember that things in Jamaica aren’t wrong just different. This really encouraged me to embrace the community and realize that our way is not the only way and difference is not necessarily a bad thing.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
My immersion experience gave me a face to put with several issues I had prior knowledge of, but without contact had never fully understood. It also gave me a great opportunity to experience a different culture and community. |

Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
Participating in an immersion trip in high school led to my participation in an immersion trip at John Carroll, and has pretty much changed everything for me. I look at the world in a new light, and I’ve realized that I have an obligation to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. As a student coordinator, I get to
see my peers go through the same thing I did, and it is really exciting for me!
What is your most recent immersion experience?
Nicaragua (January 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
You might forget the service or volunteer work you did, but you won’t forget the relationships you made and the people you met. I have been enlightened and inspired by all the people I encountered on my trip, including both JCU students and the people of Nicaragua. The mix of emotions and the culture and the reflections we participated in were unforgettable.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
As a business major, I realized there is a huge difference in just reading about globalization and sweatshops and job outsourcing, and actually discussing it and meeting people who have experienced it. Business is not a bad thing, but it needs a social conscience. I realized that I do not have to change my major to change the world… I just need to get creative and stick to what I believe in. I am so glad I did not wait until I was a junior or senior to go to Nicaragua, because I feel like it has shaped everything that I want to accomplish during the rest of my time at Carroll. |

Favorite Quote: "My first job is to say thank you to those who voted me. Those who didn't, I'm going to get your vote next time." -Barack Obama
Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
I want to do whatever I can to help participants get the most out of their experience in Immokalee. I also enjoy facilitating discussions and creating ways to develop community between groups. Immokalee will touch every participant in a different and personal way and nothing would make me happier than to help them open their eyes to a new world.
What is your most recent immersion experience?
Immokalee, Florida (Spring Break, 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
The act of service has no age barriers. I have always had this image in my head of high school and college students volunteering for Habitat for Humanity or cleaning up neighborhoods. However, my imagination proved to be wrong. When I arrived to the Habitat construction site the first morning, I saw a gigantic group of men who were about 60 years old and older. A few of the men explained that they have been helping the Immokalee area for over twenty years. In other words, they spent my lifetime devoted to serving this community. This was only one experience out of thousands, but it gave me a sense of pride to know that service does not die with age.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
My immersion experience opened my mind to a more complex and inhuman world beyond Cleveland, Ohio. Through “hands-on” interaction with a culture different from my own, I have found the courage to question unjust behavior and to stand up against the prejudices that often develop from immigration. |

What is your most recent immersion experience?
Immokalee, FL (Spring Break 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
I learned that more social injustices occur in our country than I was previously aware. I also learned that the first step toward fixing the problem is through educating others and educating the children of Immokalee in order to break the cycle of poverty.

I will never forget my experience in Immokalee. It has taught me so much about people and compassion, and I hope to return there in the future. |

Favorite Quote: “Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential.” –Barack Obama
Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
I had such a great experience as a participant and wanted to further my experiences in serving others in different environments and cultures than my own. After spending a week there, the city of New Orleans feel like it is my home away from home.
What is your most recent immersion experience?
New Orleans, LA (2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
One of my biggest lessons was to discover that everyone in New Orleans who is now living in poverty may not have been before Hurricane Katrina hit. Before the hurricane, many people with homes, cars, and 9-5 jobs lost everything. Many people were left homeless and with no personal transportation or job to make money to pull themselves back up. One man told us his story about living in this housing development and having to evacuate before the hurricane hit. He told us that he could not return to his development to gather his things after the hurricane because it was owned by the government, and when everyone had to leave, they forfeited all rights to their homes. We could hardly believe what we were hearing, much less imagine being in the situation of losing everything as he did.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
I see everyone as an equal because the position that a person is currently in may not have been the situation just a few days or weeks ago. Also, I have a desire now to serve more in the city of New Orleans. |

Favorite Quote: “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1
Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
I think that being young enables us to do a lot with our energy and able bodies, and using that energy to serve and help others is great. I want to do something worthwhile with my time and energy while I still have it and I want to use both to motivate others around me to do the same.
What is your most recent immersion experience?
New Orleans, LA (Spring 2007)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
I learned that people who are in need are so appreciative of any act of kindness you show them, no matter how small it is. I also learned just how important it is to come together with fellow students to help others and how good it feels to work hard for someone else, even if you don’t know them. Doing something good for someone else is one of the best feelings in the world.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
My immersion experience opened my eyes to the problems that we have going on right here in America, to Americans. It really made me want to continue serving others in any way that I could. Seeing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans broke my heart and made me aware of how much work can be done just in the US alone, but seeing all the other volunteers down there was really encouraging. |

Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
Going on an immersion trip is an experience unlike any other. Its amazing how much a person can learn about other cultures and people whose lives are different yet similar to ours, and also how much a participant can learn about themselves. After watching the amazing leaders on my previous trips, I felt called to take what I had learned from them and use it to help others wanting to go on an immersion experience.
What is your most recent immersion experience?
Biloxi, Mississippi (2006) and Immokalee, FL (January 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
The trip to Biloxi and the trip to Immokalee were very different trips with different goals, but each one taught me a lot about hard work. It also opened my eyes to the fact that poverty does exist in the United States, which is something I feel everyone forgets. We always see commercials or ads for poverty stricken people in other countries, but what most Americans don’t realize is that there are areas of the United States that look very similar to those we see and think are worlds away.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
Immersion experiences have introduced me to new cultures and wonderful people. They have inspired me and encouraged me to look differently at my own future, and how I can take what I learned and how I felt on the trips, and incorporate that into my lifestyle. |

What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
The most important things that I learned or were magnified for me were: the importance of family, because for many people I have met, their family is the most important thing in their life; how little I really truly need, because I am able to live simply and not want for very much; and a sense of humility because my immersion experiences have put into stark contrast the differences between my life in the United States and the lives of people living in developing countries.

What is your most recent immersion experience?
Honduras (May 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
How much space do I have to answer this question? I learned that if I hadn’t gone on the trip, I never would have met the amazing people I traveled with. I also learned that you can be told that we have a lot of things in United States and how lucky we are, but it is a completely different story to see it firsthand. I thing everyone should have the opportunity to travel out of their comfort zone and see what it’s like for other people in the world. I appreciate every opportunity I have more now than I did before I went on the trip. That’s something you can’t be taught.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
My trip to Honduras opened my eyes to another side of medicine, of Public Health and medical brigades. My lifelong dream has always been to attend medical school and be a doctor, and now that my dream is becoming a reality, I want to incorporate what I have learned into my medical career. I want to participate in these trips again and again, only this time I would be going as a physician.

It really helped me to step outside of the John Carroll “bubble” and truly experience a different culture. My immersion trip to Honduras really opened my eyes to the poverty that has stricken the world,

What is your most recent immersion experience?
Ecuador (May 2007) and Nicaragua (January 2009)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
My immersion experiences have given me an understanding of what it means to have a preferential option for the poor, and to live in solidarity with them. I have a better understanding of how necessary it is for me, living in privilege, to assist others, to return to them the essential human dignity that has been too often taken away. I have felt the connectedness we share as humans, and learned how my actions affect those next to me and half a world away.

Nicaragua (January 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
Besides learning a lot about the culture, economy, and political situation in Nicaragua, I learned a lot from the people I encountered on the experience. The conversations that I had with my host family in both the capital city of Managua and the rural mountain area of Estelí gave me amazing perspectives of the life of the people in Nicaragua. For me, the greatest thing I learned from my immersion experience is to take full advantage of creating relationships and talking to everyone who will talk with you; not just in an immersion experience, but in service, in new situations, and in everyday life. I found that I learn an incredible amount from the conversations I have with others.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
One way that my immersion experience has impacted me has been the way I view my own life. After going on an immersion experience I have truly realized how blessed and lucky I am to be living here in the U.S. and to be receiving an amazing education at John Carroll. It has also helped me be thankful for the small things in life that many times I take for granted.

Why do you want to be a student coordinator for an immersion experience?
I went on an immersion experience last year for the first time in my life. What I experienced was eye-opening, and really challenged my values and beliefs as a person. I want that same experience again; however, I would like to look at it from a different perspective.
What is your most recent immersion experience?
Jamaica (May 2008)
What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
I learned many things about the culture and the way of life in Jamaica. The most interesting thing is their free spirit, and easy-going lifestyle. Here in the United States, I feel that Americans worry about too many things. I feel that we let too many little things bother us on a daily basis. In Jamaica, people do things as they please, and when something immaterial happens they say, “It’s not wrong; it’s just different.” Then, they go on about their daily lives and don’t worry about it.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
It has made me evaluate myself as a person. Since returning, I have tried to become more conservative with the way I use resources such as water, electricity, etc. I try not to let the small stuff bother me anymore. Also since I have returned, I have started going back to church more. |

What is something you learned from your immersion experience?
I learned that home is where the heart is, although you may not have much in terms of material possessions or wealth. True wealth is found in the relationships and love you have in your life.
What is one way that your immersion experience has impacted you?
I have learned to challenge my everyday life and myself. I have learned to challenge consumption, technology, and the materialistic consumerism of life. I have learned the simplicity of life and true joy and beauty in family and friends. |
