ENTRY PROCEDURES
Teams and individuals can pick up entry rosters and return them at the Recreation Desk or Recreation Director’s office. All roster cards need to be filled out by at least the minimum number of players that is needed to play the activity. Roster cards may have a conflict section that is to be filled out by the captain. Every attempt will be made to avoid conflicts when scheduling. However, we can not guarantee that your team will not play during a time that you may have a conflict.
If an entry fee is required it should be turned in with the roster card. Fees will only be charged for special events where a high cost is necessary for the department to rent
the facilities.
There will be a mandatory $20 forfeit fee assessed before league play
begins for the following sports: flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball, and water polo. The fee will be returned to the captain at the conclusion of the season if the team has participated in all scheduled games.
Free Agents - Any player who does not have a team can sign the free agent list in the recreation office. The intramural staff will make every attempt to find teams for all players in the free agent book.
Team Sports or Tournaments (with captain's meetings)
All teams interested in playing a team sport in a league or tournament must have a representative attend a manager’s meeting. At the meetings, rules and department policies will be covered and teams will receive their schedules for the season. Also, requirements for the playoffs will be discussed. A $10 fine will be assessed to teams that miss the meeting.
Rosters must be turned in by the deadline. Any rosters turned in after the deadline will be put on a waiting list and may or may not get in the league.
Schedules will be posted on the intramural board and on the website after the captain’s meetings.
All participants must sign the roster before participating. In league play players can be added up to the last regular season game.
After playing in one game, a player may not play for another team. If a player is on a roster, but hasn’t played, that player can play for another team.
To be eligible for playoffs, all players must have played in at least one regular season game.
Individual Sports and Tournaments
All participants must complete the roster and turn it in before the deadline at the recreation desk.
Schedules will be posted on the intramural board two days after the deadline. In a tournament, additions to the roster must be made before the first game of the tournament.
ELIGIBILITY AND PARTICIPATION
All participants must be current students, faculty, or staff of John Carroll University. The IM department reserves the right to require a JCU identification card at all games.
Participation in an event without being on the team’s roster will result in a forfeit for the team with the illegal player.
A player must not play for more than one team in any given league. Exception: A person can play for a coed team in addition to playing on a women’s or men’s team.
If a player is found to play on multiple teams, he/she will be suspended from participation in that sport for that given league. The second team in which the individual played will receive a forfeit for every game that the illegal participant played.
A student may not play under an assumed name or with the use of another person's identification card. In this case, the student will become ineligible for the remainder of that sport's season, and the team shall forfeit any games in which the student played.
Professional
A person who has received professional playing status in a particular sport may not compete in that sport or a related sport at the intramural level.
Intercollegiate Athletes
A person who participates at the varsity or junior varsity level at JCU may not compete in that sport or a related sport at the intramural level unless it is noted otherwise in the eligibility section on the backside of the roster card.
Ex-Collegiate Players- Anyone who participated in a sport at the collegiate level (at any College or University) and who is currently not playing is considered an ex-collegiate player. In most sports, to keep the playing field fair, teams are limited to a certain # of ex-collegiate players. The eligibility section on the back of a roster card will alert teams to these limits.
Sport clubs
A team may have two members of a related sport club on its roster. It may have an unlimited number of members from an unrelated sport club.
Teams shall forfeit all contests in which they had ineligible participants.

Health and safety of all Intramural participants are of the highest priority and therefore take precedence over normal rules, regulations, and procedures. It may become necessary for the Director or Supervisor to close facilities, modify rules, or even to declare forfeits or cancel games.
PARTICIPANTS PLAY AT THEIR OWN RISK. Neither the intramural staff, the University, or the agents there of will assume responsibility for injuries or damage to personal property resulting from participation in Intramurals.

Individuals will not be permitted to use tabacco products when participating in IM events.
EQUIPMENT
Student, faculty, and staff may check out equipment for intramural play with their JCU identification cards at the recreation desk.
Personal athletic equipment may be used for intramural play as long as it conforms to intramural rules. Judgments on such equipment by intramural official/supervisors shall be binding until a final ruling by the intramural director is made.

Ejection/Poor Sportsmanship
Any player(s) or teams removed/ejected from an intramural contest will need to meet with the intramural director within one week of his/her ejection. It is the responsibility of the player to meet with the intramural director at the director’s convenience. The intramural director will make a ruling on the length of suspension after the meeting. The standard suspension is one contest. If a player does not meet with the intramural director, judicial affairs will be notified and appropriate action will take place.
Any person ejected from an intramural contest is to leave the field/court (playing area or facility) within 3 minutes of the ejection. If the individual fails to cooperate with the intramural staff and leave the sight, their team will forfeit the contest.
Any participant (coaches and players) who repeatedly exhibits poor attitude and lack of sportsmanship will lose their privilege to participate in the intramural sports program.
Any person involved in a fight will be penalized a minimum of one semester and up to one calendar- year from all intramural sports. That person will also meet with the director to discuss if any other action will be taken.
Sportsmanship Ratings
Officials/supervisors/graduate assistants give sportsmanship ratings to teams/individuals after each contest. These ratings reflect behavior before, during, and after the contest. If a player on your team is ejected, the highest rating you can receive is a “B”. If more than one player is ejected, the highest rating you can receive is a “C”.
In order for a team to qualify for the playoffs, a team must have an average of a "B" rating during league play.
Any team receiving a “D” can be eliminated from the league. Captain will be required to meet with the director.
Sportsmanship- ratings will be based on the following criteria:
“A”-Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship - Players cooperate with the officials and other team members. The captain calmly converses with officials about interpretation and calls. The captain has full controlof his/her teammates.
“B”- Good Conduct and Sportsmanship - Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by officials and/or show minor dissension. Captain exhibits minor control over his/her teammates, but is in control of himself/herself.
“C”- Average Conduct and Sportsmanship - Team consistently comments to officials and/or opposing team from the field and/or sidelines.
“D”- Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship-Team is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control over teammates, and him/herself. Examples of conduct deserving this rating are unnecessary roughness, showing disrespect to officials and/or players, repeatedly arguing with officials, and disregard for the rules and policies of the program.
FORFEITS
A refundable forfeit fee of $20.00 will be collected prior to the start of a season. If a team receives a forfeit under intramural guidelines during their season, the forfeit fee will be retained by the intramural department. If a team does not receive a forfeit during their season, the $20 will be returned to them at the completion of their season.
Any team that obtains two forfeits in a league for any reason will be eliminated from the league. Teams should realize that forfeits imposed due to ineligible players and/or unsportsmanlike conduct apply under this rule.
A forfeit is declared when a team or individual fails to appear or is not prepared to begin play at the end of the grace period. The grace period is as follows for all sports: If no one from a team is present, then 5 minutes after game time the game will be declared a forfeit. If one or more persons are present, then we will wait 10 minutes past game time to declare a forfeit.
If a team knows that it will be unable to make its game, the team captain should notify the director by a deadline of 5PM the day before the contest. Anything after the deadline will be considered a forfeit. Captains may notify the Intramural Director by e-mail, phone or in person. Once the director receives proper notice the team will be
charged only with loss, but no forfeit.
Specifics on rescheduling contests will be discussed in the specific sports captain’s meeting.
PROTESTS
A protest will be disallowed if it fails to conform to any of the following specifications:
Protests may be made on eligibility of a player and rule interpretations only, never on judgment calls.
Only the team captain may file a protest.
Rule and procedure protests must be filed at the time of the incident, and before play resumes. This means prior to the next pitch, snap, serve, or other action.
The on-site supervisor should try to handle the situation. If the situation is not resolved then the supervisor should file a written protest. They must note exact point and time of the game.
The IM director will make a ruling on all protests.
Eligibility protests must be filed no later than 24 hours beyond the completion game in question or before the next scheduled game if it is less than 24 hours.
If the protesting team wins the protest is negated. If the protesting team loses, the protesting captain shall inform the field supervisor if he or she wishes to pursue the protest. The supervisor will then present the protest to the intramural director.
