BASKETBALL 5 ON 5 RULES

  1. Must be faculty, staff, or student (grad or undergrad). (No exceptions)
  2. Must play for one team only. Exception: A player may play on a coed team in addition to playing on a men’s or women’s team.
  3. If a student played intercollegiate basketball this year, they can not play in this league. This means that if a player is on the online roster, he is considered on the basketball team, and therefore is not allowed to play intramural basketball. Teams are limited to two ex-collegiate players.
  4. Maximum players per team are 12.
  5. All participants must be on the roster.
  6. You can add members to your roster up to the last regular season game.
  7. Participants must play in one regular season game to be eligible for playoffs.
  8. Read and understand the rules!!!
  9. We made every attempt to schedule your games when your team had no conflicts. If you can not play at your scheduled time, you must notify the IM Dept. (x3092), notify the captain of the other team, and try to reschedule the game with the other captain. Then notify IM Dept again of the new time. All schedule changes need to be done by  5:00 PM the day before your scheduled game.  For Sunday games, schedule changes must be made by Thursday at 5:00 PM
  10. Should you forfeit a contest for any reason including canceling your game on game-day, or getting kicked out of the league, you will lose your forfeit fee.
  11. Forfeits: There will be a 5-10 minute grace period before a forfeit, depending if any member of a team is present. Also, the supervisor reserves the right to shorten the game time period if necessary. Any team that obtains two forfeits in a league for any reason will be eliminated from the league. Teams should realize that forfeits imposed due to ineligible players and/or unsportsmanlike conduct apply under this rule.
  12. Protests: Protest may be made for misinterpretation of the rules or eligibility of a player only. The protest must be made verbally at the time of the alleged infraction and reported to the onsite IM supervisor who will have the protestor fill out a request.

INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL RULES

Current National Federation Basketball Rules shall apply with the following exceptions:

  1. A team shall consist of (5) legal players. However, a team may start or finish a game with (4) players
  2. Playing Time: Two 15-minute halves with a 5-minute intermission between halves.
  3. Timing: The clock does not stop except for the last two minutes of each half and appropriate time outs. If a team is losing by 15 points or more with two minutes remaining in the game, the clock will run continuously under two minutes in the second half regardless of if the losing team pulls within 15 points.
  4. Time Outs: Each team is permitted two one minute time outs per half and one time out for each overtime period. Second half timeouts will carry over into the overtime period. Officials may call time out when necessary. If a team calls a time out and doesn’t have one, then a two-shot technical foul will be assessed, plus possession of the ball for the non-violating team at half court. After a time out is taken, the ball will be taken out nearest the spot of the ball when the timeout was called (not half court automatically).
  5. Tie Games: In the case of a tie game, there shall be a five (5) minute overtime period. Second half time outs and team fouls will carry over into overtime. The clock will be stopped during last 2 minutes of the overtime period. Overtime begins with a jump ball. If the game remains tied at the end of the first overtime, another overtime period will take place until we have a winner.
  6. Substitutions: All players must report to the scorer’s table as well as the referee before entering the game. It will be an automatic technical if a player runs on the court without reporting in.
  7. Jump Balls: A jump ball will be administrated at the beginning of the first period, and at the beginning of any overtime period. All tie-ups will go to the possession arrow.
  8. Technical Fouls: All technical fouls will result in 2 foul shots and possession of the ball. Two technical fouls called on a player will result in an automatic ejection from the game. A team receiving three technical fouls in a contest will forfeit the game at the point of the third technical. Any team to receive 6 technical fouls during the course of the season will be disqualified from the league.
  9. Intentional Fouls: All intentional fouls will result in 2 foul shots and possession of the ball. Two intentional fouls called on a player will result in an automatic ejection from the game. An intentional foul will be called anytime someone fouls deliberately not going for the ball.
  10. Flagrant fouls: Any foul that is committed with the intent to hurt will be considered flagrant and is grounds for ejection.
  11. Free Throws: The ball must contact the rim before any player enters the lane to rebound a free throw.  If a lane violation is committed by the defense, the free throw is taken again. If committed by the offense when the free throw is made, then the basket does not count. In addition, no player is permitted to be standing on the block when lining up for a free throw.
  12. Sportsmanship: Each team will be given a sportsmanship rating at the end of each game by the officials. All teams must have a "B" average to make the playoffs. If a team receives a "D" or "F" grade, their captain must meet with the intramural director, and can be thrown out of the league.

"A"- Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship - Players cooperate with the officials and other team members. The captain calmly converses with officials about interpretation and calls. The captain has full control of his/her teammates.

"B"- Good Conduct and Sportsmanship - Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by officials and/or show minor dissension. Captain exhibits minor control over his/her teammates, but is in control of himself/herself.

"C"- Average Conduct and Sportsmanship - Team consistently comments to officials and/or opposing team from the field and/or sidelines.

"D"- Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship-Team is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control over teammates, and him/herself. Examples of conduct deserving this rating are unnecessary roughness, showing disrespect to officials and/or players, repeatedly arguing with officials, and disregard for the rules and policies of the program.

  1. Uniforms: IM dept. will provide pinnies with numbers. If a team wishes not to use the pinnies they must have identical shirts with numbers on them.
  2. No dunking or hanging on the rims during intramural league play. Dunking or hanging during games or warm-ups/halftime will result in a technical foul. DUNKS ARE DETERMINED BY THE REFEREE. Dunking is defined as the driving, forcing, pushing or attempting to force a ball through the basket with the hands. No points will be awarded.
  3. Equipment: A ball will be provided, or you may use your own ball as long as both teams agree. No jewelry, hats, or dress shoes are permitted to be worn during the game.
  4. Out of bounds: A ball striking any edge of the backboard shall be in play. A ball striking the basket supports shall be out of bounds. A ball that goes over the backboard shall be out of bounds, even if it does not touch the basket support.
  5. Blood rule: If and when an official observes a player is bleeding, or has an open wound, or has an excessive amount of blood on his/her uniform (clothing), the player must leave the game. In an instance when a substitute is not available, the official may allow time for the player to receive medical attention, but the time may not be excessive in the judgment of the official. If a substitute is available, the player must leave and may not re-enter until after the clock has run and a substitution opportunity occurs.
  6. Ejection: In the case of an ejection, the player not only must leave the premises but also needs to speak with the Recreation/Intramural Director, before he/she may participate in the next activity and will have an automatic one-game suspension.
  7. Alcohol: Participants who bring alcohol or play under the influence may be subject to penalties at the discretion of the intramural director.
  8. Fighting: Any person involved in a fight will be penalized a minimum of one semester and up to one calendar- year from all intramural sports. That person will also meet with the director to discuss if any other action will be taken.
  9. Playoffs: Usually, half of the teams will make the playoffs. Record, sportsmanship, and point differential will be used to determine the top teams.
